They look like paravanes for minesweeping.

Yes this ^ is exactly what they are for. If you look closely there are a ton of ships in the game that have paravanes somewhere on the decks.

This question gets asked so much you would think WG should include a tool tip explaining these things.

I think the 4 most posted forum topics are, OP Please Nerf, Underpowered please Buff, When Subs, and What the heck are these things.

The answer is Paravanes used for clearing mine fields.

Since that's Harekaze you might notice other odd looking things on her that were used in the anime. If my memory serves, you can also spot the personal jet ski-like craft hanging up on the ship.

Paravanes make “minesweeping fast, safe, and effective.  (Pick two out of the three)”

anyways that is the ongoing joke among minesweep crews about what they do

Better yet, there should be a "Paravane" stat in the ship properties so that we can have numerous threads of how OP they are on one ship vs. another and how they need to be nerfed.  The fact that they serve no function should not interfere with these discussions in any way. :cap_haloween:

Of course, we Sims owners may start to get a bit concerned that a high Paravane stat may come dangerously close to nullifying our 49 knot sea mine ... err ... torpedo option.

:cap_look:Cap when he fires his Sims torpedoes.

:cap_old:Cap waiting for his target to reach his Sims torpedoes ... err ... Sims torpedoes to reach the target.

They are paravanes

They are really only effective against moored mines.  Of course when the explosive chisel cuts the cables attached to the bottom weight, they become floating mines.  You better hope you have EOD aboard!

I know what you are thinking - lets just shoot them.  If you shoot them, and they become partially submerged (or worse submerged 5-10ft underwater) they become mines you can't see until it is too late.

Any ship can be a minesweeper - once!

@Sotaudi LOL.

Have you noticed some ships have several Paravanes and some ships have like two. Why do these ships need so many and why do others need so few?

Are they just set design or are they some kind of for shadowing of ominous things to come?

Wake up sheeple the answers are in the Paravanes.

We can only assume "game balance." :Smile_great:

She doesn't use the paravane for their intended purpose tho. lol

WG should do a video about paravanes, the question seems to come up at least once a month.

An as soon as they did the "I want mine layers" crowd would come out in droves. Some things are best left a mystery.

We can just tell them no, same as the submarine crowd.

Yes, I can confirm those are paravanes used by destroyers for mine sweeping. Also, players might see depth charges (they look like 40 gallon drums) on the aft of some ships. These are cosmetic and included to make the ships look as historically accurate as possible. Thanks to everyone who helped answer the question and identify what that was. That is what we like to see...players helping players without criticizing or making fun of them. Carry on!

Paravenes are WoWS' equivalant to OP logs on Russian tanks in WoT.
