Who cares about the Asashio?

I did some basic research on this vessel and it had, from what I can tell, an unremarkable career which ended in 1943 after being bombed.  Why is this ship being brought into the game as a premium, and of all the famous Japanese ships during the war, what makes this so special?  The ship class is unremarkable, being somewhere between the Shiratsuyu and Kagero class destroyers.

Asashio-class would complete the IJN DD line.

But I do agree it would make a very boring premium, because there's nothing particularly wacky about Asashio-class. They are sensible design upgrades from Shiratsuyu-class.

For Asashio-class with more history, Kasumi and Michishio are better. (In fact, I think WG is missing an opportunity with Michishio, since she was part of the Nishimura fleet wreckage that was recently found)

 

For more interesting and 'different' IJN DD premium, this is better.

I know that bote. That is a Hatsuharu-class DD as designed isn't it?

The original 5 gun, 9 torpedo Hatsuharu would be lethal and entertaining. Triple tubes reloading faster than quads gives her ~50% more firepower than say Kagero (depending on torpedo options selected  - Akatsuki chucks 9 Type 90. Mod 1 every 76s, Kag throws 8 of the same fish every 101s), plus putting 18 torpedoes in the water with TRB, and a more aggressive gun placement?

 

Asashio is very samey, not particularly noteworthy, has outright poor intitial stats release which always poisons things and I suspect is on course to rival Gascogne for 'underwhelming premium 2018'. On the other hand, as an underwhelming and not particularly interesting ship she'll be in good company with Shinonome...

Now I suspect this ship to have both TRB and smoke like the old Shiratsuyu. And I think she will probably have garbage torps .

Where's the info/link that Asashio is being introduced?  Will it be helping to complete the IJN DD line after Akizuki, or will it be a standalone premium?

I've heard nothing of this yet through the usual grapevine.

It sounds like it's going to be a stand-alone premium.  It was announced on the WoWS Development Blog on Facebook.  Looks VERY similar to the in-game Kagero, with a possibly slightly better concealment??

I think the only reason to add it to the game is it does at least represent a class of warships that actually saw combat and is not currently represented.

 

Clearly they should have gone with the Matsu class instead, which would be hilariously difficult to tier as it's basically a cross between Akizuki and Wakatake.

At this point all the major premium ships have been introduced into the game, except for a couple - so developers are just jamming whatever's left while the playerbase is still alive.
