Strap in for a written description of a battle I had against one of our moderators today. It was a roller coaster of excitement, suspense, and shock.

I was minding my own business and queued up in a Kiev which I had just upgraded to Hull B, raring to get enough XP for the 8km torpedoes. I get a Standard Tier 8 battle with high-tier BBs and a Tier 7 CV matchup on the Land of Fire map. Great I thought to myself, I have a good chance to do some carrying this game.

I get a white blip in my chat box with the phrase "Coo" in it. @Pigeon_of_War happens to be the Saipan across from us. We get to a little smack talk and right from the outset of the battle he has the gall to focus me! Luckily I am a Green Belt in rudder-fu, and Pigeon still has a thing or two to learn about manual drops...

Halfway through the game with another two close-call torpedo drops from our Honorable Moderator, I sailed undetected from the east side of the map to the west side of the map. I managed to evade a Mahan and a Nurnberg who were busy with another DD in the area. This is my chance to get into the cap while they're all busy! I spot a Nagato who was right on the west edge of cap and I commit to a 4km torpedo run. He took away half of my health in the process but I put him down. Kill #1 Make my way into cap and who do I run into?

It's that b*****d who was trying to manual drop me so hard! Revenge was sweet as I poured the 130mm HE onto his flight deck while he fruitlessly tried backing off the island he perpendicularly parked into. It was too late! And with his final strike, he set it to automatically drop on me as my smoke dissipated. As I was smoked sitting in cap, the Nurnberg had turned around to try and reset, but I burned him down from half of his health. Kill #2 The gig was up when the smoke left; I was spotted inside of the cap with the wrath of Pigeon's automated minions above me. A full health North Carolina steaming directly at me with Pigeon's automatic drops and hovering fighters bullied me out of the cap until I could get out of detection range back from whence I came (the islands to the west).

7 minutes left. We're down 4v6 on ships. Our numbers consisting of a Mahan and Duca on a wisp of health, 3/4 of a Scharnhorst yelling for smoke cover, and me running for my life. The Scharnhorst and I finish a low-health Tirpitz  Kill #3 and a half-health Bayern as our Duca and Mahan fall to Davy Jones Locker. 4v2 it's on now, with both teams at equal point counter.

As I tunnel-visioned to help our Scharnhorst finish the enemy Bayern, I unwittingly sailed right into the sights of a Leander, 4.5km away. Lucky for me, he grounds himself onto the middle island and finishes me off just as I get in range and send my prayers and torps away. I watch the camera as the Leander fades from our teams vision. All four torps from my second salvo predicting his back up land. 'Devastating Strike', 'It's Just a Flesh Wound' Kill #4.

With that kill our point counter rose, dooming the other team to defeat as time runs out. 1:30 on the clock. It's a near-full-health North Carolina chasing a fifth-health Scharnhorst from 9km away in the middle of the western island cluster. The Scharnhorst managed to evade two salvoes all the while using his repair party consumable to bring himself back up to a quarter-health. Yesss all of Pigeon's smack-talking will be for nothing, this is in the bag!

Little could I have imagined that the God of Potatoes and RNGesus had something else in store. The Scharnhorst turned to fire HE at an enemy he had no hope of bringing down and ran aground dead-broadside to the North Carolina's guns. Don't worry, I tell myself, it's 5 seconds and our enemy is about to come across a tall island. He doesn't have a clean shot. Full salvo out from the NC with 1 second on the clock. His shots barely clear the obstacle and hit the helpless Scharnhorst as the screen fades to the results.

Shock and disbelief roll over me as I hear defeat.mp3 before the screen shows the results of battle. The North Carolina did it, with 0:00 on the clock. An unusually good game for me in my Kiev with 4 kills, 154k damage, and tactical importance to the team taken away from me with less than a millisecond left.

As frustrating as it was, it is one of the most memorable games every played. I loved the banter from @Pigeon_of_War and the intensity of the match was unparalleled. I haven't had that in Random Battles for a while. It made me realize why I love the game so much, even if I was on the wrong side of the scoreboard. If you've gotten through my story, I applaud you, I know I'm not a writer but it inspired me to try.

A dirty kill-stealing Bismarck. Can't trust the Germans...
