Question about the phoenix

I'm just curious.. whats the point of giving the phoenix the hydro search ability.. if your only going to limit its range to 2.5k and 3.5k by default.  Mean at that range your crew is pretty much already going to see everything.. without the help of special machines... no?  'hey guess what, you can look in the area you can already see'...

It's too short ranged to help spot DD's, but it helps give you a bit more reaction time to incoming torpedoes.

The hydro is mainly used to spot enemies in smoke or to spot torps earlier.

 

Edit: or also help to spot ships on the other side of an island.

IMO - along with her speed and her guns it makes the Phoenix, one of the better T-IV DD hunters.

By calculation, the activation of Hydroacoustic search consumable can give you 4 seconds more reaction time from spotting the torpedo that you dodging or getting hit by them, around 3 seconds more reaction time against the otherwise almost invisible Pan-Asian deep water torpedoes. It also allows you to spot enemy ships in close proximity even around islands.

Personally, it makes me a little more confident in closing in and engaging enemy ships with torpedoes. It is something that can come in handy, and not using it doesn't harm you.
