This makes me sad ...

Lingguan tower, claimed to have been the tallest wooden pagoda tower in Asia, burned to the ground in a fire yesterday.

Photograph of the blaze.

The tower burned for four hours before collapsing.

That is a very very tragic loss both in an architectural and archaeological sense.

I'm sure they will build a replica, given how good they are at pumping out building projects, but something just can't be amended.

That replica will be impressive and beautiful and but a ghost of the original, as everyone will always know that it's just a copy.

That was one massive fire. I'm going to have to look this pagoda up.

Think I got this right. Linggu Pagoda is not connected with the temple, but [3]was designed by American architect Henry K Murphy and built between 1930 and 1932 as a sign of remembrance for the soldiers.[4] The nine-stories tall pagoda stands 60.5 metres high. Speeches made by Sun Yat-sen and epigraphs of Chiang Kai-shek were inscribed on the tower

FTFY =)

That'd explain why it burned down.

If that was the reason it would have happened long ago during the Cultural Revolution.

Sad. Thanks for the heads up Lert.

I saw some of these pagoda temples, they were really beautiful.

No apologies necessary. Just figure I'd overreact in what I hoped was a sarcastic, semi comedic way to a comment that didn't really add anything to the topic, that being the sad loss of a beautiful work of art.

If you want your buildings to "stand for all time," make them fireproof and so big that they are too much of a hassle for people to tear down.

However, even buildings such as these won't last forever.

were once as tall as the Himalayas.

Obviously all we gotta do is yell at the tectonic plates to get back there and push up some new mountains.
