I'm no engineer but that is a lot of weight raised up some 30 feet above the main deck. The turret would weigh 2000+ tons (for comparison Yamato's turrets weighed 2,774 metric tons each).   With a heavy sway (side to side roll) the pendulum effect of 'X' turret raised this way might be felt on the entire ship.

I'm imaging the crew in the forward turret when the second turret let's rip in that targeting solution. Good Lord man... their chests would erupt from the pressure wave! :cap_haloween:

Actually the original Nelson X turret was not allowed to fire at sharp angles towards the stern as it would blow the bridge windows out.

The taller Barbette needs heavy armor - that much weight will definitely mess things up stability wise.

I got very interested in what you said and so looked it up.

So I read it up on wikipedia, and in the firing trials when the X turret was fired 30 degrees abaft and 40 degrees in elevation the bridge windows blew out.

Now what is more interesting is they even tried fitting tempered glass but the blast still ensured the shattering of some windows and caused flying debris on the bridge.
