I was just thinking of this concept yesterday, honestly probably not too practical in real life for a global Navy like the US, but for Iran, or even China and the South China Sea who may want to do some area denial it could be useful.

the concept is basically an LPD but instead of amphibious armored vehicles it would carry FAC/FIAC beyond their normal operating ranges so shore based boats and MFD based boats could catch an enemy in an unexpected pincer move, or simply intercept a blue water vessel farther out to sea than the crew would normally expect.

depending on the boats/class of FAC would determine how many it could carry, but 3-8 seems like a reasonable number.

larger FACs like the Roussen class could escort it and cover it while deploying the smaller boats, then join the attack.

the MFD itself would probably be armed with a 40mm-57mm gun on the bow, 18-24 VLS cells for area defense SAMs (quad packable missiles like ESSM) 3 20mm-30mm guns P/S/A

Again much would depend on the vessels chosen but you could fit 3 Chinese CAT-14s in a San Antonio sized well deck side by side and two length wise ahead of those three

Being escorted by 2-3 type 022s to join the attack, you’d be able to move a fairly effective mosquito fleet around to contest FONOPs or try to maul SAGs. The trade off of cheap boats for large surface combatant could very well be worth it.

No problem, honestly just an entertaining idea, nothing I’d ever seriously pitch to a major navy if I had the opportunity, but basically just an amphibious ship that poops out small attack craft rather than landing craft, that can be accompanied by larger/heavier attack craft

Correction, if we’re talking San Antonio class LPD for this or at least the same well deck dimensions, you could double the above mentioned load out.

Or one or two more if you’re using type 071 LPD we’ll deck specifications.
