If you scroll down to the real world discussion section, you will see alot of threads about ships. The community has put together a great compilation of both well known ships and ships you may have never heard of.

edit: These wikipedia articles should be a good place to start.

There are also a few Navy types lurking around here that may or may not have useful information if asked.  Some of them would likely be very glad to answer specific questions.  *hint hint  cough cough*

All nations in World of Warships will begin with destroyers.  If it were me, I'd brush up on what a destroyer is, its origins, its role(s), and  watch as many videos about them.  Then, look at the forums and search for topics about destroyers.  Look at the Q&A threads and discover what others are asking about them, and what the KGB has said.  The first step is usually at the bottom, and destroyers are at the bottom of World of Warships.

It was my understanding that every tech tree would begin immediatly after a nations tier I ship. As a result, I am not sure it is entirly accurate to say that Destroyers are at the bottom of World of Warships. Please correct me if I am mistaken.

Aside from that, those are some pretty good links you posted.

I was under the impression destroyers would be the leading tier 1 for all nations, branching off into other classes.  I'll check the Q&A database again (I'm compiling) to clarify this.

ADDENDUM:

By no means is this the final word on this, only a discussion builder for this clarification:

In the FAQ:

Q: What classes of Warships will be presented in the game?

A: In the game we will introduce following types of Warships:

  • Battleships. This is the heaviest ship of the team. The most armored and protected warships, which normally have medium speed and large-caliber weapons

  • Cruisers. Depending on the specific warship, the main traget of this class will be hunting enemy destroyers or protecting the team from aerial enemies. And, of course, Artillery battle with other cruisers.

  • Destroyers. The smallest and the fastest in World of Warships. Torpedo's are their main weapon and battleships main targets. Also can help with aerial defence of the team

  • Airaraft carriers. Big and vulnerable warships, which have big range of fire thanks to planes: fighters, bombers and torpedo carriers. The gameplay on an aircraft carrier will be similar to RTS-games.

With Destroyers being the smallest, it would be a starting point for other classes.  Still looking at my database.

I just found it in the Faqs section. The starting tier 1s for the IJN and USN are going to be the Erie Class Gunboat and the Katori Class Cruiser.

There is a section named Battleships areawhere a lot of people have contributed to some very specific ships.  Windhover 3 links about dreadnoughts, and the (important to understand the game) Washington treaty (and later London treaties), are also things you should read.  Nations were imposed some maximum displacement for their ships.  Some listened, and some pretended to listen... Lichtenchtein, I'm watching you...

You could probably ask me anything about the second world war, and I would probably know about it.

Is that so?  On what date did Navy Pilot Lt. John F. Lewis qualify on jet assisted take-off units in a PBM? (I only know because I have his flight log book)

How much wood could Churchills chuck, if Churchills could chuck wood?

As everyone knows, the rate of wood chucking by a Churchill is directly proportional to the hardness of the wood being chucked, with a known concentration of wood, and a given hardness the quantity of wood chucked is also a direct correlation of the number of cigars smoked.
