Fun fact of the day: The heaviest aircraft carrier of WWII was the Ijn Shinano which was a converted Yamato Class battleship.  She displaced 72,000 tons fully loaded and would by today's classification system be considered the worlds first Super-Carrier

Fun fact of the day: There were also plans to make aircraft carriers out of the two remaining Iowa hulls, but this was cancelled after it was shown that the resulting ship would preform worse than a Essex class and take longer to build for more money.

Fun fact of the day:  There were also plans to do a hybrid carrier conversion in the 80's with the front two gun turrets being kept while the rear of the ships would be made usable by VTOL aircraft..

Fun fact of the day: The oldest steel warship afloat today is the USS Olympia, a protected cruiser.  You can currently visit her near Philadelphia PA right across the river from the USS New Jersey.  She is also my profile pic.
