I don't think WG lied per-se, just had a change of heart.  Remember when WG said that only USN DD's would have Defensive Fire?  Look how quickly that disappeared.  Heck, you could probably go back to CBT when WG said that only USN Cruisers would have DF and now pretty much all of them have access to it.  The game changes and evolves and WG is trying to figure out how to stay on top of those changes to keep the player experience tolerable.

oh, so they are keeping their radar are they?

Why do they need radar when they already get the fast RoF of USN guns at those tiers?

honestly there trading there smoke for the radar, which is commonly used for DD survival  unlike Cruisers who trade there scout plane for radar

All ships should have access to any type of module, with some restrictions. For instance, radar should be available for any ship above tier 5.....but it cannot have smoke if it takes radar...or hydro.

 

Would make the game less gimmicky.

Considering Radar hard counters DDs it should be taking the same slot as Repair party. Hard counters are never good for any game.

In reality, US Destroyers had:

Smoke

Radar

Fast firing guns

Good Concealment

---- what they didn't have ----

Torpedoes that can reload in less than 6 hours.

Because they're pushing the dumb DWT gimmick too. 

 

Drop the garbage torps, drop the radar, and you get a decent line with no stupid gimmicks that doesn't give the community AIDS.

USN DDs didn't even carry reloads, they had to go find a supply ship and hope the seas were calm enough to actually reload the tubes, or return to port.

Well if we are going for reality....

Radar was not equatable to 21st century Satellite Scan.
BBs were long range artillery and highly incapable of landing main battery hits on a DD.

Giving all ships POTENTIAL access to radar would make high tier DDs completely unplayable, except maybe the khab.  Coming within 12km of any enemy ship would be too deadly to risk.

 

Kind of like Clan Battles are for DDs right now I guess.

Radar wouldn't be a big deal if it wasn't Satellite scan, going through all islands, mountains and terrain. The problem is that the current iteration is a hard counter. Hard counters are NEVER good for ANY game. They remove skill from the equation.

If Radar remains in its current iteration, then either DDs need to get an ECM consumable in the same slot as smoke, that nullifies enemies sight range/range to detect other ships in X radius for Y seconds....... OR  Radar needs to take up the same slot as Repair Party.

There needs to be choice involved. Where if you are going to have access to something that powerful, you have to sacrifice somewhere else equally important. That is how balance works.

You mean like how without radar, smoke hard counters literally everything that has less than 8 km torps? (assuming the ships in smoke aren't BBs spraying wildly)

The unified economy thing failed b/c there is waaaay too much gold and credits and XP sitting over at WoT. People would have had tier 10 ships in the first week.
