backbone of many dishes? filler of many matches. matches consist mostly of potatoes, and it's a contest to see which side has better toppings.

think about it. do you ever eat a potato based dish for the taste of the potato? no. it's for the taste of the things you've mixed with the potato. even sweet potatoes are topped with sugar, marshmallows, etc.

Before a Potato can be turned into any number of foods or other useful items you have to dig them up and Age them.

I think it perfectly acceptable to call some captians potatoes because they are covered in dirt and if you expose them to sunlight they can turn toxic. 

Green potatoes have to be aged in dark tunnels or root cellars to remove and limit the production of Solanine. This toxin in large amounts "can cause nausea, headaches and neurological problems".

And after playing with a bunch of random captains I tend to suffer from nausea, headaches and neurological problems. 

Besides labeling a player a potato is kinder and easier than calling them a Window licking mouth breathing troglodyte.

From a purely scientific viewpoint, when you eat a potato, which is mostly starch, your body converts that starch to sugar (glucose), which it then stores as fat upon your ever more padded rump.
