Carry [kar-ee] : when a player or small group of players dominate a match such that their teammates' efforts were worth far less than their own.

Sentence Example: Those players really carried their team this match.

Pictorial Example:

"OH SHOOT RADAR RADAR RADAR THREE CHAPY 10KM FROM MY SHIMMY"

Btw at least that Yammi gave me tons of damage near the end.

This doesn't show a carry. Even though the top player got six kills, the next two got nearly as many points so they were causing about as much damage, not to mention that they got six kills between them. The seven below this group all had over or close to a 1000 points each, so they were contributing a fair share too. In fact, the only player who didn't contribute much was the last on the list, and he may have been sunk early for all I know.

More of a carry than the original post, but still not a carry, in my opinion.

Just spitballing, but to qualify as a carry, I'd say you need:

1. 2000+ base xp

2. No one else on the team > 1000 base xp. Certainly, no one else on the team > 2000 xp.

Kills almost don't matter when you set those conditions cuz if the rest of your team is sub-1000 base xp, you're probably the only one doing any of the killin'.

If my vision of this there is no Carry. Carry is a term used by people who do not understand Team play. The think they won a battle by themselves. Somehow even though someone did not do damage, they may have been the one who used their torpedoes to turn a ship which you managed to broadside and destroy. They may have been spotting or even set smoke. Maybe they were taking damage and being the focus of the enemy while you stayed back a little and finished off half dead ships. Did you do that by yourself...NO.

Team play may have issues because we speak different languages, live in different areas and have different dreams. But somehow and in some ways maybe those players you thought did nothing, in fact made everything possible for you to score so well.

perhaps you should consider just saying thank you and be gracious for the score.

I have a technical definition of carry

XPtop > XPnext(1.5)

The XP in this instance is the XP shown on the end screen.

For example, if the top player scores 2000 and the next player scores 1300, then that's a carry because 2000 is greater than 1950 (i.e., 1300X1.5).  If the next player scored 1400, then that would not be a carry, as 2000 is not greater than 2100 (i.e., 1400X1.5).

While I understand that a true carry is more than can be described by an equation, I use this as an objective measure to go by.

So essentially a carry is impossible at higher tiers under these parameters? 1000 base experience at high tiers, specifically 8-10, is extremely common in a win. Looking back through some of my recent really good wins and I gotta say, if no one on my team can be above 1,000 base experience, a carry is impossible beyond tier 6-7.

Carry: An instance within a battle where your team fails just hard enough, to allow a single, or pair of players to take advantage of the situation and pull out a fabulous victory, with a spectacular personal performance.

Really, you cant carry unless your team fails, but not to bad.  They have to do just enough to allow you to carry, more so then you personally doin the carry all on your own.  You get a carry when you happen to be in all the right places at the right time and your team killed off just enough to give you a fighting chance.

So propose some different criteria. Btw, I wouldn't consider any of the examples you included to be carries. Very good games, to be sure, but not carries. 5 kills is, to me, not sufficient to warrant the claim "carry". There needs to be some obvious disparity in base XP, in my opinion. Carries are not "dime a dozen" games. Even in randoms, it's not THAT common for entire teams to fail except for 1 or 2 people.

Kolobanov's medal in WoT and Solo Warrior here may be good starting places, but perhaps TOO strict.

To me most kills are not always the best indication of who really Carried their team if all the other aspects do not match up with it.

For example someone who had massive damage and no kills  most likely Carried their team more than the player with 4 kills and average damage.

I have also noticed that some of the best Carry games do not always come from the winning team but rather from the loosing team.

A player who from start to finish keeps their team in it with little or no support until that player has been sunk and all hope is lost for a comeback.

To me  they did more for the team and Carried the team harder than the opposing player on the winning side who had several kills that resulted mostly from good team focus fire and they just happened to get the final shot the majority of those kills.

Never said they were, merely pointing out that requiring everyone else to be under 1000 base experience just isn't feasible at higher tiers. Given that criteria, a carry would just never occur beyond tier 7 and I just don't believe that is the case. I have seen hard carries at tiers 8, 9, and 10.

That is definitely too strict, I've carried games before and dragged my limping teams to the finish line, but I only have two Solo Warriors in almost 5k games played. The bar should be set pretty high to qualify a game as a carry, on that we both agree. A carry is a combination of factors, including base experience and the play of your teammates relative to your own play and I am a lot more lenient in calling games a carry because if one player pulls the dead weight of several (4+) players to a win, that is a carry in my books. The whole notion of a carry is that you play at a level that compensates for the poor play of your teammates.

Only 10 ships on each side, so the damage and kills could be higher.  But... First blood, Kraken, High Calibur, Confederate, 6/10 kills and a cap.

I'd say that group of 2000 xp players carried, judged on xp alone. But i have had numerous games in Monty with 2000 base xp, first in team score, good damage, but didnt feel I carried.

Based on my carry equation, it's not a carry for the top player.  However,  as the second player's XP is larger than 1.5 times that of the third place player, one could say the top two players carried.
