If your problem is about using your existing account on steam. Then no, you cannot. Since you didn't actually say anything about a problem.

What is the advantage of having World of Warships on Steam and not just the regular download through War Gaming?

Nothing.

Steam is just a bigger avenue to broaden the exposure of the game through, especially geared towards those who only play games through that platform.

Ah okay. Thanks for the info. So there is not an advantage to playing the game through steam. Thanks!

Huge advantage on Steam as since the switch I've gone 66-2 in my win rate. :)

Yes, you can.  Delete this file in your Steamapps/common/world of warships folder then start the game.  It will bring you to the normal login screen.  steam_api.dll

Video about it here.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qC4fHadPjV4

Why don't you just continue playing on the account you already have?

Why are some people so bothered by this?  Honestly, am I missing something?

I don't really understand why you would have to do that. What is wrong with playing your account from the Launcher? Or just the executable?

Informative, though I don't see why you'd want to run that way. No Steam stats or visibility from/to the Steam community (?).  And it eats another 30+GB of your storage.

I'll just stick with WG's installation (though I do use Steam for other games).

You don't have to.  No benefit at all for existing accounts.

The problem with this Steam thing is that if the Steam community becomes big enough, why would Wargaming keep up their own version of the premium store/everything else? Why waste all that money on overhead. I'm worried that we'll all be screwed eventually and have defunct accounts that can play the game but not do anything else. Corporations love to cut unneeded overhead, they could use all that extra money to increase content output/gameplay improvements. Might be better for the game in the long run.

Honestly, I think Steam is saving Warships... Wargaming's wage overhead must be pretty significant. Why do you think they pushed World of Warplanes 2.0? If the new version doesn't start generating decent revenue... it's doomed.

There's a reddit post on how to use your existing WoWS account on steam. You'll have to mess with your installed game files so it's not koshered, do it at your own risk type solution.

Because they keep 100% of whatever we spend in their premium shop, vs. Steam likely taking a cut. (tinfoil hat says that's why they can't merge accounts, so Steam gets no cut of what existing players spend)

I don't think overhead is really an issue. Never mind the premium shop, they kept running and developing an entire GAME that hardly anyone played lol.

WG is not going to do anything that stops all their existing customers from spending money.

If the Steam community gets big enough they will leave us with our thumbs up our butts, all the money we put in will be wasted when 2 years from now ONLY STEAM IS GETTING NEW PLAYERS. They'll make WAY more money via volume... So what if Steam takes a 20% cut, if they're doing 5-7x the sales.... This is what i'm talking about. They're going to make way more money with less overhead, it makes perfect business sense. Wargaming doesn't want to become the Russian EA games... They just want to make the games, they don't want all the headaches of distribution/servers/stores.

Why not both? Just how much additional overhead do you think is involved in operating a website that exchanges money for virtual goods? They're obviously making money on their premium shop now, why would they cut off any source of income?

Gaijin operates their premium store for War Thunder alongside Steam's offerings, why would WG be any different? It's not like you have to choose only one method of collecting money.

The only thing you'll see is that Steam and the premium shop will likely offer different packages. (like they do for War Thunder)

And lastly, although I wish it were different, 5-7x the sales through Steam is wildly optimistic IMO. I believe that a good chunk of people that will stick with this game, and spend appreciable amounts of money over time, are already here. Most of the players coming through Steam are going to play the game for a bit, spend a little money, and move on when they hit a tier where the meta becomes too difficult to learn.

It will be interesting to see if Steam-only players get directed to this forum.  If the launcher is the same then the links on the launcher page will direct them to WG's site, from which the forum is accessible.  But pimpage would be good too.

This could be a bad thing. If a large amount of players leave this version to join the steam version the server population will drop. Then there will not be enough players in both platforms. Why are they choosing to divide the server? I thought the success of a game relies heavily on the amount of players playing the game. If there's not enough people the game will die. You would think that you would want to increase the player base to maintain a healthy population.

This steam version would create a divided and conquer scenario for them, possibly costing them more in the long run. I would think they would join the servers at some point....

Really...where's the numbers bump from all these incoming Steam players? Didn't it go live today? :cap_hmm:
