So a few years ago I drew a spaceship and since then I've been creating a comprehensive universe that it fits in. As I am particularly intrigued with history and technology (especially military history and technology), I've mainly been drawing military vehicles and equipment, along with developing humanity's backstory. The point where this timeline diverges from ours is in the late Cold-War ('70s -'80s). In it there are three species that occupy the galaxy: Humanity, the Xerquon, and a yet unnamed (very) hostile alien species (I'll use UHA to refer to them until I can think up a good, alien-sounding yet pronounceable name for them). Each species has a government that controls a large portion of the galaxy.

Governments:

- The Commonwealth of Human Systems:

Spoiler

Humanity is the newest race to enter the galactic stage, but also has the largest piece of the galaxy. Their governmental system is a very tiered democratic republic (Planetary region -> Planet -> System -> Group of systems -> Groups of those groups -> Top level governmental body).

Humanity made first contact in CE 2187, while preparing their first relativistic space mission to another star. Humanity had, up to that point ~200 years of peace and prosperity, having prosperous colonies on the Moon, Mars and Ceres, with Mars partially teraformed, and an operational space-elevator.

- The Xerquon Nation:

Spoiler

The Xerquon established contact with Humanity. They, as a gift, gave Humanity a few FTL drives and communication sets. Have been an ally of Humanity for as long as they have been in contact.

- UHA government:

Spoiler

Very oppressive (xenocide and Stalin-esque purges of their own citizens), very hostile and agressive

Militaries:

Ship classifications (smallest to largest): Fighter*, Fighter-Bomber*, Bomber*, Shuttle*, Small Landing Craft*, Corvette, Frigate, Destroyer, Cruiser+, Battlecruiser+, Battleship+, Dreadnaught+, Super-Dreadnaught+

* = not capable of FTL travel unless caried

+ = carries small craft (excludes Carriers and Assault ships)

IRL Fletcher volume production runs (low triple digits) are small for the largest, most expensive warships, with those dwarfed by the numbers DD and smaller warships (gotta escort the very expensive fleet assets somehow)

- Humanity: Kinetic weaponry and a heavy focus on superior firepower (well versed in artillery- and orbital- bombardment)

I will update this post with more information and pictures later

Comments? Anyone else making a sci-fi universe?

I have several.

Right now I'm working on two (not that I'll ever finish either one). The first is basically, the world as we know it... in 25 years after the discovery of controlled gravity, which made fusion power trivial. With fusion and gravity controlled, space travel became trivial. It's just now getting to the point where spaceships are common, but not yet to the point where extrasolar colonies are common (or large). The story is about the new doctor on a small freighter.

The other one is much larger in scope, taking place both before (cause of) and after (the results of) a massive interstellar war touched off by a slightly unstable captain.

Working on a mobile starbase/battleship design for Star Trek. Built during the Dominion War, the class were ready for battle in time for the Battle of Cardassia, the end of the war.

I put the Enterprise-E, the Enterprise-D and Kirk's Enterprise in to show scale. This is a work in progress so I apologize for all the other stuff floating around the ship.

Both of these sound truly interesting. Ever think about posting them online somewhere?

I'm one of those writers that can build tech and universes almost easily. But I have very hard times with plots.

I can make them available if you'd like to read them. However, I will require an NDA. I have had work stolen from me in the past (by a rather famous science fiction author).

I started a story and made a universe for a species I originally designed for Star Trek.  My own universe combines elements of Babylon 5, Gundam mecha style anime, Masters of Orion, and several elements of history.  Really should get back to writing it.

I've got quite the sci-fi on the go, almost 30,000 words of a novel too.
Postcards from Shasa, not sure what genre to call it, Action-adventure? Comedy? Hard Sci-fi?   It's got a bit of everything, follows the story of the first contact mission between two alien species, both have been chatting via radio and television for decades but one of them is finally ready to take a crack at flying between the two planets.  This isn't some silly Star Trek tale where they have a warp-drive or something, it's all contemporary rocketry and modern tech following the "Twenty minutes into the future" trope, pretty much the tech we have today but with a few differences, such as the D.S.E. Aquitania's advanced VASIMR engine.   (Note, image below is of small crewed launch vehicle, not the Aquitania, that would be more similar in design to this, I haven't gotten around to painting an image of Aquitania yet... )

So, for setting you have Aratta and Shasa (Planet 3 and 4-A respectively)
postcards_from_shasa___matar_solar_syste

Aratta is pretty much Earth while Shasa is much more aquatic and tropical with dense jungle covering most of the islands and tiny continents.
Though when you get into the set-dressing, that's when things get interesting, Aratta is a world that used to be a typical fantasy world. Elves, dragons, castles, etc. but a few thousand years before the story, a comet impact wiped out most of the species that couldn't adapt, leaving what we would consider Elves to be the dominant civilization (they pretty much were already anyway).

Speaking of "Elves", here's the main cast:
dariya_commission___satrathai_by_chobittnadari_commission___satrathai_by_chobitttheana_commission___satrathai_by_chobitttala_commission___satrathai_by_chobittsu

Left to right you have Dariya, flirty Xenomarinebiologist and the character from whom the novel gets it's point-of-view.   Nadari, her BFF, complete scaredy-cat and Propulsion Engineer.   Theana, grump veteran astronaut and "Hurricane Hunter" (she flies weather recon aircraft when not doing space things).   And Tala, Shasan Civil Defense Officer, liaison to the other three while they're on Shasa, and absolute joker.
The novel follows these four during the events of the mission.... buuuuutt not everything goes according to plan, one of the crew is found dead, bringing to light a conspiracy that threatens both planets~!

Dun duuun duuuuuuuun!!!

Postcards from Shasa - Chapter 2
Postcards from Shasa - Chapter 3
Postcards from Shasa - Chapter 4
Postcards from Shasa - Chapter 5
Postcards from Shasa - Chapter 6

I also have a sci-fi version of The Wizard of Oz but it's shelved while I work on PfS, it has a higher chance of success~

Holy cow, that's amazing! Meanwhile, I'm over here with the ship side views that are just pixel art drawn on Paint.

I have one in the works... though I've neglected it for two weeks now. It centers around four races (technically 7 if you count the one that has three subspecies), and their conflicts, both military and political.

There is no definite plot or main characters yet, but the races are pretty-well defined.

The Ius

Spoiler

There's the Caste-based Ius Ascendency, which are highly technologically advanced to the point that they are practically indistinguishable from machines, or, at least, the upper-classes are. Their technology allows them to do things which seem like magic to humans, and it has only been in the past century that humans have begun to grasp, at least a little bit, how their marvels work. The Ius have highly-powerful energy weapons and a very powerful, highly-mobile stellar navy. Ius science and their caste-based system form their religion, which worships their Emperor, a being known as the Deus Ascendant who is incredibly intelligent, prophetic, and, to most other races, completely dissociated with reality.

The Ius are always attempting to manipulate the Humans into waging war on the Malachi, whom they fear.

Humans

Spoiler

The Humans, of course, are represented by the United Terran Empire (which I still want to rename), which is a highly-nationalistic Empire that is bent on controlling the stars and subjugating other races that emerged from the ashes of nuclear war after the collapse of the UN. They have mediocre ships with heavy firepower, thanks to breakthroughs in Quantum physics which have allowed humans to manipulate quarks. Such weapons are known as Quantum Destabilizers, and they are used, not only as heavy weaponry by most of the UTE capital ships, but also as a superweapon capable of annihilating planets and systems known as the Quantum Destabilization Array (basically, a focused array of over 400 individual Quantum Destabilizers, firing in a pulsed fashion and capable of creating a massive annihilation reaction). Humans are obsessed with creating the perfect human through genetic engineering, which is the leading cause of their Cold War with the Mah'Ren.

The Humans view the Mah'Ren as dangerous fanatics which present a threat to interstellar order (read: their Empire's prosperity).

The Humans have a large criminal element, which rivals that of the Malachi.

The Mah'Ren

Spoiler

The Mah'Ren are formerly-human guerrillas, originating from an early UN space project. They originated after a "lost" expedition, cut off from all contact to their parent civilization, managed to sustain itself, then thrive, expanding to a small interstellar coalition. As the Mah'Ren continued to expand and grow, Divergent Evolution took its course, until the Mah'Ren were a completely separate species from humans. After they regained contact with Humanity, however, the UTE deemed them inferior and launched a war to subjugate them. The Mah'Ren expeditionaries, however, managed to communicate back with their President, who mobilized their fleets and mounted a fierce counterattack against the Terran incursion. When the UTE threatened to annihilate the Mah'Ren system, the President ordered that the Mah'Ren begin nuking lost planets when forced to retreat from battle, as well as ordering nuclear strikes on Terran Planets. With the prospect of fighting a large and costly war for highly-irradiated territories of no strategic or economic value, and after the Ius issued a proclamation forbidding open warfare, the UTE promptly withdrew from Mah'Ren space, establishing a large Demilitarized Zone, and creating the Cold War that currently pervades Terran and Mah'Ren societies.

The Mah'Ren view the Terrans as oppressive fascists who want to eradicate or enslave their race.

The Malachi

Spoiler

The Malachi are the oldest race and have the youngest government of any in the system. Formerly wracked by feudal strife and rampant criminality, the recently-established Malachi Federation has recently emerged that have consolidated around 40% of Malachi systems and are growing rapidly. Though most of the information from previous Malachi civilizations vanished in the destruction of the Library-planet Eden, which is still not fully-understood by any race, the Malachi still possess an odd combination of high technology coupled with a pervasive optimism. The Malachus genome is not fully understood by human scientists, and they possess some sort of entropic power which originates within the Malachi and gives them their "psychic" prowess. This power gives the Malachi the ability to somehow manipulate entropy/energy and entropy/information equilibriums, reorganizing them to how they see fit; an ability that is terrifying to the Ius, which hold order, or, at least, their interpretation of order, as paramount.

While Malachi psychologies tend to differ between subspecies, they tend to be highly emotional, impetuous, and idealistic. Malachi ships are highly durable and feature their morale-breaking "psionic" weapons as well as traditional weapons. The Malachi are the only race which lack any sort of Faster than Light transportation other than wormholes provided to them by the other races.

The Malachi have three distinct subspecies, which are thought to have motivated the mythology of most of early Humanity's religions: Demons are thought to have descended from interactions with the mostly-criminal Ravager Malachi, Devils are thought to be related to the Regent Malachi (the fast-dying feudal subrace of Malachi), and Angels are thought to have been created to explain Seraph Malachi (the race which founded the Malachi Federation). Their entropic powers are thought to be the cause of what were once regarded as "Miracles". Since, however, Terra is highly irradiated, no proof of this theory has ever been found.

The Malachi, as a Federation, are not at war with any race, though all races hunt the Malachus criminal element, just as they would any other criminal element.

Note: Technically, the Terran Quantum weapons don't actually annihilate anything, they just reduce ordinary matter to large quantities of Quark-Gluon Plasma. However, "annihilate" is easier to type.

All of your fictional worlds are interesting.

Basically all of the things I've designed have been designed in 3D without a sketch to guide me. This is probably why I've only finished the model of one ship. :Smile_teethhappy:

I'm personally finding the hardest parts are 1) naming things, 2) not getting bored while modeling and 3) organic shapes.

I tend to get ideas here and there, but they rarely accumulate into anything noteworthy, and they just fizzle out. The one exception tends to be Empire ideas for Stellaris.

I'm a big fan of the genre but the work I have is mostly fantasy based rather than science fiction. Love the character and universe designs, would love to read all of these!

Yes I borrowed my name from a series of books by Keith Laumer and others.  Older science fiction is really good from time to time.  From the 1970s-1990s there were a lot of really creative ideas out there.  It wasn't as mainstream but the books you find from that time are generally better.  If I ever write my own, they will be partially inspired by tanks
