Got my Tier III Kuma and - thanks to a stupid move on my part where I purchased Weymouth instead of saving the slot for another IJN ship - I now have only one free ship slot left and no way of purchasing more. My question to all the veterans out there is this: should I go for Tier IV and get Kuma, or stick with Tier III and get Kawachi? I'd like to go as high as possible tier-wise, but at the same time the chance to snag a BB is quite alluring. Thanks to all who vote!

The Kuma is superior.  Kawachi's guns only go out to 9km and are terribly inaccurate.  Also, Kuma gets Hydro and a Fighter, which are a unique addition towards getting into high tier play.  Lastly, many contests require a ship of at least tier 4 for entry and having one should allow you to earn other free ships as they come along and possible earn more port slots, etc.

It's been a looong time since I played Kawachi but I recall that I wasn't too impressed with her. However, the IJN BB line gets better as you up-tier.

Kuma however, is a great ship, probably the best tier 4 Cruiser.

I don't remember liking the Kawachi, but the BBs after her are great

NB: Why u have no name?

I started playing before creating an account and that's the name generated. I'll change it eventually. I'm leaning towards Kuma more and more now. Thanks, everyone!

Kuma for sure, just recently re-purchased it for the fun factor, Kawachi....sucked big time.

The Kuma's a good choice. Cruisers are best for newcomers/learners, and I find most of the Japanese cruisers very enjoyable to play with.

Kawachi and her successor, Myogi, are both rather mediocre ships. If you survived those two however you end up with the Kongou which is a very competitive ship.

Kuma herself is a great ship, she is fun, effective and will teach you a few things about the game that you will Need in the higher Tiers. Just don't get too used to the fast firing guns as Furutaka will otherwise be painful. What follows the Kuma are all solid Cruisers with only a few smaller Problems.

^Truth!  The same one who made that Kuma video also did one on the Kawachi.  I think the consensus is it's one of if not THE worst BB's in the game.  They get better once you get past it.  A lot of people just free XP past it.  It truly is an awful ship.

Kawachi is indeed the worst BB in game (other than Mikasa, but at least that one has a hilarious factor to it)

Ship-per-ship I would say Kuma. Good ship, maneuverable, and fun. Ultimately it depends on the line you want to pursuit. The IJN BB line gets good at T5 with Kongo. The IJN cruiser line makes a drastic change at T5 when it switches to CA from CL with Furutaka, which is a good ship, and gets better going up.

PS: I would strongly recommend you change to a proper user name. Many players will not respect an unregistered player. and will not accept a div or a clan with unregistered players. If you like the game and plan to stay, please change your username ASAP.

As with most above, Kuma gets the nod. A great DD killer, fast and handles pretty darn good

My 2nd favourite ship in game

Archer

Easy vote.

Kuma is one of my favorites, and she has earned a permanent spot in my port.  I don't play T4 very often at all anymore, but I do still really enjoy taking her out.  She plays like a big, nasty destroyer.  Great guns, good torpedoes, but fragile.

You are most effective escorting DD's into caps, using islands and their smoke as cover/concealment.  Help them shred any red DD's that contest the caps, which you can easily do with Kuma.  Then lob HE on battleships and burn them down.

I think there are a few things that make low tier cruisers great training ships:

  • High rates of fire = more practice with aiming/hitting targets
  • BBs have poor aim or tend to stick with HE, so getting deleted by an AP salvo is less likely
  • Good mobility helps with dodging torpedo attacks and fighting off DDs

Once players are more used to the controls and mechanics, they'll get more enjoyment out of the gunnery-focused battleships, or the torpedo and stealth-reliant destroyers.

I have always found that Cruisers were the hardest, of all the types of ships in the game, to play or master. Without the armor of BB's or the stealth of DD's, cruisers require constant attention and maneuvering just to keep from being deleted. IMHO, and ONLY my humble opinion, BB's are the easiest line to learn and do well in.

Kawachi leads to the Myogi, which leads to the Hosho.

The Hosho is by far the greatest seal-clubber of tier 4.

I free-XP'd past Kawachi and Myogi to go straight to the Hosho.  It was a great move.

I later revisited the two battleships and finished them off - to make them Elite.

On my second account, it was my primary goal to make this path.

The two ships desired were the Cleveland and Ryujo.  And this account now has them, with 11 point/10 point scenario award captains respectively.

She has good torps, speed and guns.

I think that South Carolina takes that spot.

Learned 'aiming and fast shooting' in St Louis.

Learned killing destroyers in South Carolina after I got tired of being deleted by them, (and by IJN cruisers.)

Never did like IJN cruisers, they have never worked out for me.

For me, I didn't have a huge problem with the SC.  Was actually fairly easy to play.  Ground through it pretty quick.  At least it has a few more guns than the Kawachi.  But if the CV split happened at the SC, I'd have probably free XP'ed past it.  Neither are great ships.  But playing the Kawachi just wasn't a lot of fun.

But, different strokes for different strokes.

Kawachi actually has more guns, and has the ability to wiggle towards the target allowing the usage of three guns rather than two.

Kawachi..I like the secondary being reinforced with a pair of 12 inch turrets. [ Primary target feature of CO's training.] Works on Nassau as well.. can engage on either beam.

My bad. You're right.  Guess I need to rewatch some old "Count Count" episodes.

And wiggling toward the target is how you make it work.  I just disliked playing it a bit more than I did the SC.  But I can easily see how many would put it high on their "HATED IT!" list.  Regardless, there are better ships once you grind past either of them.
