With British BBs, has American BB upgrades and gameplay changed?

Hello all,

I'm currently skilling up my tier 6 and 7 American ships. Currently I'm working on my New Mexico. I have 16 captain points working on #17. (It's just how I play that's not the question).

I was in a game last weekend and I had a 1-on-1 battle versus a Queen Elizabeth. I was at 3/4 health, enemy was at about 1/2. I was angled, and he was mostly broadside. I lost.

He was firing HE, and knocking 8-10K damage a salvo. And I was doing 3 or 4K tops. Maybe I was angled too much. I don't know. And I'll admit I could've played that duel better.

But the question is... has the strategy of gameplay changed with the British BBs? Has the choice of upgrade modules and captain skills changed because of their HE?

What are other BB players doing to counter the British HE?

RNG hatin' on you, or bad aim. NM should have been able to shotgun hammer a broadside QE.

If both of you were angled, for example, switch to HE and hammer back with 50% more HE shells.

This too.

Not sure I've really changed much except for this; but then I tend to be a bit more laid back then some are, (usually...)

You hit them with AP.  Be disciplined in your DCP use.  Don't show too much sides or you'll get set on fire 3 times in one go.

Another big thing, later in the tiers they get low citadels.  But they have lots of bad plating all around the ship.  AP does wonders on them.  You won't get citadels, but you can rack up good penetrations.  Don't go in an HE slugfest, you'll lose that.

An angled NM should be able to nom a broadside QE at close to medium range nine out of ten times. Any more than that you're looking at more RNG than skill or wisdom. Since you were angled, him firing HE at you was the smart thing to do.

Sounds to me like just a case of bad luck.

NEVER TAKE THE FIRE PREVENTION CAPTAIN SKILL.
Please read any of the posts explaining the absolutely laughable math involved. "It simply makes it so you get lit on fire by the ninth shell instead of the eighth one."

Read Pope Shizzle on this. Also note it results in one less possible fire lit. Oh, and never use giant caps (shouting) unless you are being humorous, and you're not.

Rule of thumb is to never go on 1v1 against a RN BB.

You can take fire prevention and basics of survival skills. They will help but it won't help you win a duel.

Oh I'm gonna use all caps for this. The fire prevention skill is a joke, after all.
Admittedly, I should have been more clear about which forum posts to look at.

This one here covers all the bases in great detail.

The fact players with 60%+ WR don't recommend taking on a Royal Navy BB 1v1 should be a wake up call for the devs.

No it isn't. You're not even reading what everyone points out right there in the discussion you linked:

THREE FIRES INSTEAD OF FOUR IS GOOD!!!

Everyone has their opinion. I would certainly go 1v1 against RN BB in a German BB for example. The big issue especially with low-mid tier RN battleships are awful turret traverse and not great gun angles, so they often expose a lot of broadside. Might not be able to citadel them but dealing huge penetration volleys is good enough.

Not sure about USN dreadnoughts though. If things don't according to plan you won't be able to disengage.

Angle doesnt work against HE shells OP, in fact sometimes is better to give your broadside and let them hit your belt because the belt may shatter the HE shells. But be carefull with that because If they change to AP you are [edited].

Also what ammo you was using? RN BBs are HE spammers, but other lines still do better firing AP most of the time. If you were using AP them you need to aim better, if the QE was broadside you should have wrecked him with AP.

Remember you have longer gun range than the Iron Duke or Queen Elizabeth in the same tier American BB so you can sit back and shell them if you are good enough with your firing accuracy. I keep a close eye on those HE spammers in battles. I prefer the German, IJN and US BBs to them actually but I kept the tier 3 British BB just for fun like the Nassau. I got tired of the Iron Duke and Queen Elizabeth rather quickly & sold them for some reason? I just wasn't having fun with them even though I had some really good games with the Iron Duke. The QE and I didn't get along very well. Their slow speed was also some of the reason as I tolerate the US BBs tier 5-7 slow speed but prefer the faster BBs in WOWS.
