Non-camo liveries in the Game?

Camo or livery

  1. 1. Do you buy permanent camo for your ships?

    • Yes (I could use the extra XP)

I don't know what WG thinks about this idea, but I am interested in the idea of replacing the current set of permanent camo with historically accurate non-camo liveries for the non-premium ships in the game (or at least add it as an option along with the camo).

What do you think?

I like the idea. Always wondered why the IJN vessels never had they're strips in game

Same here, some IJN warships even have crests painted on their stacks.

Hey XXRed_DawnXX! The good news is that it's entirely possible for you to create a historical custom skin (this is a skin & not a cammo since it will be like the ARP ships - cosmetic, but offer no conceal or shot dispersion bonuses, etc.) for your ship and view it as you play your game.  There are many players that you could probably find that offer a variety of custom developed skins already.

The limitations are that you will be able to see the skin as you play (as it's installed on your PC), but no one else in game can and will see a naked ship.

If you're asking about WG supporting a custom skin that everyone can see, that would probably be unlikely, since WG would have to provide a mechanism for players to distribute their custom skins, altho something like a "Skin Developer Kit (SDK)" coupled w/ a download library of skins would seem to me a possible idea to give the player options of what specific skin they may want to see in-game.   It still would mean your skin would not be distributed automatically so that everyone who updates their game would see it, but it's half a loaf.

One of the things the game would have to add to make a skin selectable is:

  • The server-client info model for custom skins must be or made to be compatible w/ how info on skins/cammos are kept in game.  Currently, cammos are consumables that are actually kept on the server (so it tracks how many you have as you use them).  If you ever looked at the ARP ships, the cammo button is disabled implying the skins they use are client side only manifestations and they've disabled the cammo button for this reason (this is why the view option for the ARP skins is within this model and an easy feature, but if you turn the viewing off, you see a naked ship).
  • The UI has to be upgraded to model how multiple selectable skins will be treated which would be somewhat distinguished from how cammos are treated, tho the UI extension would be similar looking.

I was thinking of doing that, but there are a lot of problems with this idea;

1. There would be too many skins to download for many would have to be downloaded one at a time.

2. The downloaded skins would cause problems with the other visual effects in the game (flags, lighting, etc.), as well as making the rest of my ships look like they came from the 'mothball fleet'.

3. It would stretch the limitations of my game and cause more crashes to occur.

4. When a new update is released for the game, I  would have to repeat the process of downloading and reset the setting for the game all over again.

I think I misunderstood your original post - you were asking WG if THEY could provide alternative historical cammos for tech tree ships akin to what they did w/ the Bismarck Campaign cammos, correct?

I could see this happening on a opportunistic basis (i.e. if there is a high profile ship coupled w/ an event like what they did w/ the Bismarck Campaign) as a mission reward type of thing (then it would be treated as a custom cammo).

I also could see WG doing this as a monetization feature that they could employ if there's enough demand (i.e. pay for your historically accurate cammo!).

I somewhat agree, though as long they don't think a 'shipwreck' variant  is seen as a suitable livery.

I like this idea. I have a weakness for historical correct camo, but also wondered why there are no more historical skins released like they did with Tashkent and Hood.

Giving a ship just one uni paint job wouldn't be too much effort I think. I'm pretty sure it would be an option though, not a replacement. Apparently camouflage patterns are way more popular, hence why Tashkent and Hood got a camo job available as well.

Just saying, community made skins are a good alternative.

And, if you have photo editing software, learn how to make one yourself.

IMO, I love making skins. (I stink at it, but hey.)

And downloading a skin is a good way to tell the creator that you enjoy their work.

If you have read my response to hangglide42 about the same idea, you would know the problem with it.
