Just for fun, I've decided to use the HP equations that WG uses for different classes and extrapolate that for modern warships. I'm using the following formulas (courtesy of @Lert) which gives generally accurate results for ship HP except for some outliers.

Battleship HP Formula: (1.1812 X tonnage*) + 10837

Cruiser HP Formula: (1.8631 X tonnage*) + 9859.4

Destroyer HP Formula: (4.4907 X tonnage*) + 3435.5

Aircraft Carrier HP Formula: (0.7311 X tonnage*) + 28253

USS Gerald R. Ford: Aircraft carrier, 100,000 tons, 101,363 HP (almost as much as Grosser Kurfurst despite much greater displacement)

Related image

USS Port Royal: Cruiser, 9,600 tons, 27,745 HP (about as much as an Atlanta)

USS Port Royal approaches USNS Washington Chambers while underway in the South China Sea. (32457704772).jpg

USS Zumwalt: Destroyer, 14,564 tons, 68,838 HP (kek:Smile_trollface:)

And just to throw in a Russian surface combatant.

Pyotr Velikiy: Cruiser, 28,000 tons, 62,026 HP (still not as much as Zumwalt :Smile_trollface:)

EDIT: As a bonus, here's the HP formula for submarines, based on the Halloween event.

Submarine HP formula: 2.7656 x tonnage + 5837.7

Ohio-class SSBN/SSGN: 18,750 metric tons, 57,693 HP.

Izumo Class (Helicopter) Destroyer - 27,000 tons displacement - 124,684 HP :Smile_trollface:

DDH-183_%E3%81%84%E3%81%9A%E3%82%82_(1).

Unless you wanna call it a carrier, which turns into 47,992 HP. Classification can make or break this ship. :Smile_teethhappy:

Good mother of christ on a bike the Zumwalt is ugly as all sin. Was the person that designed that thing legally blind or something? Either that or they built the thing upside down.... :Smile_amazed:

Wave-piercing tumblehome hull meant to be much stealthier than even the reduced-RCS Arleigh Burkes. Carries a pretty mean armament package too, eighty Mk.57 AVLS.

That's cool but what would it's concealment be? Like 1 or 2 KM?

Yeah yeah, its super sneaky ninja ship. It still looks like a week old turd that someone forgot to flush.

I always laugh that they can call a nearly 15,000 tonne warship a "destroyer" it is nearly 6000 tonnes heavier than the Tico class cruisers like Port Royal haha

It's build solely for functionality not aesthetics.

Now for a Cold War/Gulf War throwback, the 1980s refit Iowa. 57,256 tons, 78,468 HP.

Next to her is a Perry class FFG (close enough to a destroyer), the USS Halyburton. 4,100 tons, 21,847 HP (less than the Khabarovsk...)

A top speed that is classified, but for all intents and purposes is very fast.

"Stealth"

They made it stealthy by creating a ship so ugly, you refuse to look at it, or acknowledge its presence.

+1 for the Burkes, I think they look great. Here's a good picture of the Halsey.

USS Long Beach

38812 HP

I built a model of this thing when I was a kid.  Very weird looking ship.

03-12-14-1%20036.jpg

A funny little story about this ship, she originally did not have any guns.  The story goes that President Kennedy (WWII Navy veteran) visited her and complained why the hell a Cruiser doesn't have any guns.  So the Navy put some 5" guns on her in the middle of the ship.

It's easier to get approval for funding from Congress for a DD than a CA/CL

HNLMS De Zeven Provincien, F802, lead ship of its class of destroyer, 6050 ton, 30600 HP.

We call them Frigates but they're considered destroyers by many navies. You be the judge ...

Armament:

  • 1x Oto Melara rapidfire 127mm
  • 2-4x Browning M2 .50 MG
  • 4-6x FN MAG 7.62mm MG
  • 1-2x Goalkeeper CIWS
  • 40 cell vertical launch system
  • 2x2 Torpedo launchers

It carries:

  • 32x SM-2 IIIA surface-to-air missiles
  • 32x quadpacked Evolved Sea Sparrow missiles
  • 8x Harpoon anti-ship missiles
  • Mk 46 torpedoes
  • 1x NH-90 helicopter with flight deck and full servicing hangar

It's primarily designed as an anti-air and command ship with some ASW and Anti-surface capabilities. Since commissioning the four ships of this class have been mostly used in anti-piracy operations. In terms of styling they take a bit after the Arleigh Burkes, but considerably better looking in my not so humble and probably quite biased opinion.

Well the Tico cruisers were based on the Spruance class destroyers.  AEGIS was supposed to go to sea on the Viriginia class cruiser hull with nuclear propulsion, but the Navy couldn't get the money for nuclear power and AEGIS in the same hull.

So to get AEGIS to sea, they put AEGIS on a destroyer hull - and originally the Ticonderoga class cruisers were designated as destroyers until Congress intervened and made the Navy change their classification to cruisers.   so with a stroke of a pen, the Ticonderoga class destroyers became Ticonderoga class cruisers.
