So I fired a few HE rounds from a Marblehead on the fly at a Mahan  and boom(Devastating Strike) . At the end of the battle i saw i got 30 hits total on several enemy ships but none on this  DD . Penny Lane, very strange, if you ask me LOL

HE shell blast radius interacts with modules even if the ship isn't directly hit, so you can detonate without damage if that blast encompasses the magazines.

Happened to me once:

Splash damage seems. That DD was extremely unlucky it seems lol

Also, if you're curious about the detonation mechanics, @LittleWhiteMouse has written up some amazingly in-depth reviews and testing on how dets work in the game.

That HE shell landed next to the ship, exploded on impact with the water and the splash from the explosion penetrated the thin armor of the Destroyer. This dealt splash damage (that does not reduce your hitpoints) which also affected the magazine. Dices were rolled, RNG said 'nope' and the detonation was triggered.

I once got a defended ribbon without getting a shell hit indication. Now I know how this was possible.

I think splash damage also affects cits, but it's either that or an underwater citadel.

Yes , i have seen that too, by hitting a module and no damage.

Others- Thank Y'all for the replies, I figured it was something like this , i just didn't quite figure it would be a 'water hit". i can imagine the other guy rage quit after that. LOL Might still be :etc_swear:about it. I fired 5 shots while going the other way full speed  at 12+Km or so(near at max range) , he was moving in the other direction full speed at kind of an angle, i was moving evasively to behind an island  2 of my shots hit the island I was passing behind. and those 3 that went were simply "spray and pray' for me. i did not even see them  land and bang (dev strike). Well past a :Smile_coin: for me, of course he got 10 mag flags , maybe he will use them next time LOL

Marblehead's 152mm HE has a blast size of 8.7m.  You don't have to hit her directly to damage modules.

Good thing that the game doesn't model actual HE precisely because an air burst of 16-inch HE shell would take out just about every non-armored AA gun on a ship, not to mention damaging rangefinders, radio antennas and killing any unwary sailor who was not buttoned up.

16" HE Naval Round
Blast Radius: 193 feet
Hazardous Fragmentation Radius: 614 feet
Maximum Fragmentation Radius: 3,770 feet

Yeah, they do that in this game though they downplay it a lot.  This is the total blast diameter.

  • Japanese 410mm HE:  35.1m blast = 115 feet
  • American 406mm HE:  36.9m blast = 121 feet
  • German 406mm HE:  37.65m blast = 124 feet
  • British 406mm HE:  39.15m blast = 128 feet

The largest module damaging explosion in the game right now belongs to the Conqueror's 456mm HE shells at 48.75m in diameter or 160 feet.
