The Dazzle Paint Camouflage is attributed to Norman Wilkinson, an artist and illustrator who painted a lot of marine scenes.

Also, it wasn't just for botes:

That's a cool picture of the Myoko as she surrendered to the Royal Navy in Singapore, along with the heavy cruiser Takao and the destroyer Kamikaze. This is what her premium doubloon camo if based off, and that's why it looks so different to all the other IJN premium camos.

That's a trip; and the only ones I got right were Bogue and Ranger (and that only because I recognized the triple stack arrangement.)

Cool post, thanx!

There were two squadrons of PT boats camouflaged in various patterns of what were called "Zebra stripes" at the time, one in the Mediterranean, one in the Pacific.  A total of about 8 boats got some variant of the pattern.

This was a test to determine the effectiveness of such patterns.  What was discovered was:

1.  The patterns were too small.  At longer ranges they blended together to the eye and the boat looked grey.

2.  Closer in they could cause some, usually short-lived, confusion in identification and course.

3.  They were very hard to maintain and put a lot of extra painting work on the crew.

The result was they didn't last long in service and the boats reverted to either haze grey or got the black and green Measure 31 design 20L or similar instead.

Some of the patterns really confuse my eyes! I know there isn't a huge corner there but the camo makes me doubt what my head is telling me!
