I know another one of those questions :)  I've been reading about both ships and I'm to the point where I'm financially(in game) about ready to buy the Mogami. However saying that I'm also not unwilling to fork over the $ for the Atago and save the in game currency for other projects.

In the Current state of the game, which is in your opinions the better ship? or is it a Toss up?  I do like the Repair party access of the Atago.

I tend to be a little more aggressive then I should be at times, maybe not such a good thing at this level with these ships, but it is what it is, I like the 155's scenario on the Mogami but I'm also just getting really tired of the "HE" spam all the time from everyone..

Both seem like very good ships, although I'm sure my initial foray into High tier playing will not be stupendous to begin with.. I've played against 9's with my 7's but not seen any 10's.  World of difference I'm sure.

All advice welcome,  actually I may end up just staying at 7 because you seem to get both sides of the house without the exaggerated costs of high tier gamming, well not as much anyway. This maybe my one and only 8..

I'd say get both. Atago is basically the same as Myoko, aside from the health pack and forward firing arcs. As for the mogami, it's a flamethrower with 155s and IFHE, granted both are typically HE spammers.

I have both and they are good ships.  The Atago and can recommend  her as she very good guns and can train any IJN Cruiser Captain.   The heal is a great benefit as both ships are rather squishy.  Torps are even between them.  The Mogami is a very fun ship to play and much better after the buff to her guns.  She eventually leads to the Zao which is a very fun ship to play.  Unfortunately, the Ibuki has to be played first.... my nemesis even though others do well with her.   Personally, I would pick up the Atago to help build FXP and at the same timer grind the Mogami.

Additionally, I would not play either ship too aggressively as they are not armored enough to be front line battlers

the Atago being a premium ship is worth the money... and when you throw in your MOgami capt you double the % of XP for dailys... and it is worth it... get both..

Plus the Bonus flags, dragon and others for $$ make it a credit printing machine...

Atago is great, heal keeps it in the game, better torp arcs easier to use - Mog had it to get to Ibuki, then bought it back when the 155s traverse was buffed, then sold again - tier 8 is a rough place to be - more fun to run the Atago - and since it seems that most games I ran the Mog, was getting tiered up so might as well play tier 10 cruiser tech tree ship.  You will not be disappointed if you buy the Atago, but don't miss out on progressing and getting the Zao.

Atago is a much more forgiving ship, and rightfully so (it's a tier 8 PREMIUM--you know what that means). Better concealment, repair party that allows you to fix quite some damage, even citadel damage, good torpedo arcs and good maneuverability--you know it's not going to be that hard to master. Nevertheless, Atago still has quite a high skill ceiling, and therefore room for excellence and improvisation.

Mogami is more situational. If you are using the 203mm you are doing it wrong, so you 155mm is what you will end up using. In the game, Mogami's acceleration and rudder feel slightly more sluggish than Atago, and, it may not be obvious at first sight, the Mogami is actually very frail--her hull has a higher silhouette, and the forwards and rear of the middle citadel rise aren't well protected. Not having damage repair party certainly doesn't help. Forget about torpedo charging anyone, your torpedo is mostly a resort of "try your luck" when you are kiting. The selling point of Mogami is that terrifying dpm--a very situational weapon that might as well be a game changer. Used wisely, the Mogami can be a much bigger impact than her tier 8 cruiser colleagues.

Both ships play differently.

I have both.

The Mogami will lead to Do a.

Can't go wrong with Atago fun ship, good for credits and can hold it's own in tier ten. the torps are kattywompus or in other words suicide torps as you have to give a full broadside to give both sets off and they have very restrictive firing angles. the angles of the guns are tricky too. The heal is great, the detection is a touch better......the Mogami, is my newest favorite toy. use the small guns and spec it for IFHE, you have 15 guns on this beast. the torps are also weird angle but you can fire both sets off at the same time...mainly behind you they are definitely different than atago, I like the Mogami torps much more.

I only have 5 games in the Mogami and over 400 in Atago/Takao. I like the fire power of the Mogami better, but the Atago is probably a safer choice...$$$.

Also, do you have the ARP ships? the Takao is the Atago, just less credits but acts as a premium ship.

LOL, the way things are trending I may end up with both.

Thanks for all the information.  I've played in games with both ships now and both have done well, and I kind of like the Mog with the 155's.. it will be a tough choice actually.  I like the Repair party on the Atago, cause if you make a little mistake you can stay in the game with it, or survive long enough to do more damage to RED's.

Thanks again.

Atago is a good ship to have for making shekels and training the captain but Mogami is glorious.  I've wanted the Mogami since before the game existed and in game (with the 155mm guns) it is unique and worth investing a captain in.

Thanks for all the Advice, for now I have gotten the Mogami !   Only a few battles in her, still adjusting to the game play in her.. Only have an 11 point capt.. Can't wait to get the FCS mod to extend the gun range a bit.. 14.2 with tier x's is not happy making..  :)   Nothing like seeing "14 hits" pop up..

I will say it's nice seeing some new maps though.. except for freaking EPICENTER.. arrg I dislike that.

I'm seriously still considering the Atago though :) that way I can leave the Mog with the 155's ..

Atago.

Repair Party, trademark IJN stealth, solid performing 8" guns, more useful torpedo tube arcs, and you do not need a high points captain to make the most of her.  A simple 10 pt captain to have Concealment Expert is already hitting all the wickets in the basic functions of Atago.

Mogami?  Well, you need that CE like any Cruiser.  You need that EM to help on the turrets even post traverse buff.  You need that IFHE for more consistent damage.  And despite all that, you have no Repair Party like Atago and every bit of damage you take is a setback.

10pt Atago captain

PT

AR

DE

CE

That's it.

To make Mogami more comfortable to play

PT

EM (help on turret traverse)

DE

CE+IFHE

That's 14pts, and that is excluding AR.

And you still have no Repair Party like Atago.

Also, Atago is a Premium Ship and you can swap captains in and out freely.

Mogami was painful for me at first but once I figured it out I really love it.  I am so glad we get those 10 point captains from doing the weekly operations so I have a dedicated Mogami captain now.

I have both and I love them both for varying reasons.

Atago, as a few users have already pointed out here, is a credit printing machine if your games go well. That amazingly low detection range (if you build her well) makes her a good scout and a DD hunter if supported by other DDs and a CV or two, and those torpedo tubes can really turn the tide of a fight around (though I'll admit, it takes a bit of luck).

Mogami, while a bit difficult to get used to at least for me when I started using with her, is just wonderful at harassment with those 155mms. You'll scare DDs away and troll CA/CLs and BBs with endless fires. While her detection range is bigger than Atago's, she can be surprisingly stealthy if you build her appropriately.

Only drawbacks I can find for those ships (aside from being BB fodder if you are unfortunate) is that Atago's guns are a bit too slow for a CA, while Mogami is too easily citadeled. And with the latter having no RP, every HP counts.

Why chose?  I have Atago, 155mm Mogami, Ibuki and I'm quickly closing in on getting Zao.  Atago and Mogami are keepers. Most likely drop Ibuki when I've earned Zao.

It's too bad you weren't around in time to earn ARP Takao, and get your free Atago.

So far I like it, still figuring out where to be and where NOT to be. The OCEAN map,  HOLY CRAP  at 14.2  gun range that is not a good map for the MOG.  Right now and just like the Myoko, I've gotten killed more often than not trying to launch torps, although I have been successful doing so a few times..

I think Atago will be soon..  I need more Doubloons though so.. choices choices

Wish WG had a shopping cart arrangement would make things much easier.

Thanks for the Captain builds, I'll check against what I have, think the Capt. I have in there is 11 or 12..

Atago is a better ship. But cost real $$$. Mogami isnt a bad ship but is free.

If you have no problem with $$$ Atago is worth it. Really good and fun ship to play.

OK guys, thanks again.  So the outcome is I started with Mogami and now also have the Atago !  So BOTH it is, lot's of fun with both of them except when you get deleted by a Yamato from 10k cause "where the heck did he come from" scenario :)

Both have unique play styles, I love the 155's, but the Atago plays more like the Myoko but on Steroids.

First game out in the Atago, 98K + in Damage to other team, was awesome. Thought I saved the screen shot but evidently it didn't work.

Playing both frequently but against IX and X's it's tough, specially in the BB department and freaking DD's spew torps like a hose.. but all fun and doing ok with them.

Thanks Again.

I still find it ridiculous that the guns the ship was designed for are inferior to the turrets that had been slapped on it to pretend they were light cruisers, and immediately removed in favor of the 20.3cm when war arrived.
