It would be actually useful if it came up in a timely manner instead of 1-2 seconds after your shells are going to hit the islands and didn't stop 1-2 seconds before your shells will miss..

Just a polite little  request.

It uses the mean or average number of guns occluded by terrain to give the warning.  Unless you wish to have the terrain indicator lit while some of your guns can fire unobstructed, learn how to use this helpful tool.  Besides, unless you are constantly zoomed in it's very easy to see if terrain is blocking you shells.  Furthermore, WTH?  How can you have so many matches and still rely completely on the indicator anyway?  On the off chance I'm being trolled, I'm going to visit Captain Morgan and put at least three sheets to the wind...

I think its tied to the spotter postion on the ship.  Press "c" to swap between.  Use fore position approaching islands and aft position leaving island.  Even then, dispersion will still lob a shell or two into the land.

It would be even more useful if it didn't automatically aim at the islands when the ship is right there capable of being fired upon.

Because while you can easily tell if you are far enough from the island to shoot over it, the indicator is the quickest and most accurate way to determine if the unseen (but locked) target is far enough from the island that you can hit it.
