And video suggestions for some "basic training"?  Most streamers only play or review higher tier battles, which is like apples and oranges for a beginner, so I'm looking for links on successful "lower tier" play strategy.

Since you asked for low-level play action... https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCm65auW45c9RUdwN0VFkapQ/videos

Watched a few videos and read your brief commentary for each one.  Why is the Umikaze a "different animal?"

With an upgraded capt., this boat has a tight detection radius (around 5km) and a very fast torp reload (around 18sec), thus you can keep torps in the water continually WITHOUT ever being seen. I spent most of that Umikaze vid undetected, and thus was able 'surprise' the boats I hit, as they didn't expect torps because they never saw my DD.

Most other DD's need to get close for their torps, or must wait much longer for torp reload, or have better, faster guns, or better maneuverability. Umi should stay hidden like a sub and shoot those lovely, unlimited torps every 19 seconds.... or at least that's how I play it... for 16 torp hits on various ships.

Thanks for responding.  This post is much more positive than I expected given the rather dubious review you gave the Umi in your video comments.

BTW,  I'm enjoying the videos.  Thanks for taking the time to produce them.   :Smile_great:

I really like playing the Umi - really! It's just that often my team mates don't like the way I play it because they think it should do the same thing that other DD's do, which it really can't. I play it like a stealthy submarine, unseen and with a constant barrage of torps. I try to choose an obvious 'lane' of enemy traffic and keep it constantly filled with torps (as I did in the vid when I circled and fired for a while).

As for the vids... I record all my games, most of which are on Twitch for 14 days, and some of which are on Youtube for(ever?). I do it because I play almost exclusively Tier 1, and there is almost NO serious T1 play recorded for others to see. I invite other players (particularly those tiring of the grind and considering quitting) to come back to the time and place they fell in love with this game: Tier 1! The vids are my video evidence that there is a highly competitive environment there, and not just a bunch of 'baby seals' that are still learning how to drive and fire.

I'm of the same mind.  I routinely point out to players in WoT that Tiers III/IV are very different than they used to be - with many more skilled players hanging out down there.  Might have been paradise for a few seal clubbers once upon a time but since the new patch (9.18) it's gotten much more competitive.  It's not uncommon for the total battle count of a Tier III/IV team to exceed 150,000.

As my Signature indicates, I'm a strong advocate of playing the Tiers you enjoy... :Smile_Default:

Also OldFrog, once you get up the tiers, another good channel to learn is Flamu. He does ship reviews, recommended builds on ships. If your looking at really understanding basic game mechanics and knowing them well, iChase has a series called the CaptainsAcademy on YouTube aswell.
