They were also up on points, and gaining with the cap lead. They had five ships (2 BBs and 3 CAs) to our three (1BB and 2 CAs), equal in tier. Our only option was to attack. Red just had to defend the mid cap. We headed to the mid cap to hope for the best. It was in the midst of a storm, so visibility was limited. Our two CAs found a Yamato in the cap before my Montana was in range. One CA was deleted, and the other damaged down to 10% HP. 5 vs 2. I was already down to about about 50%...the CA down to 10%. Things looked even bleaker. But on we pressed. Although our deleted CA didn't contribute much materially, it was a serendipitous moment that his attack vector took him to the east of a small island whereas my vector went west. In the close range T10 BB game, it's all about position position position...of those turrets. Engaging the CA put the Yamato's turrets to port. As I rounded the west side of the island...I was presented with Yamato's starboard broadside at nigh point blank range. A gift! Twelve shot broadside, triple cit, plus a few pens...erased all but a smidgen of Yamatos remaining HP. Secondaries finished him off. 4 vs 2. But just as we cleared the Yamato, we were faced with a 40% Kurfust and a 90% Zao. Our T10 CA was quickly dispatched. 4 vs 1. I was able to dodge most of the Zao torp spread and get a good salvo into him, reducing him to about 20% as he turned. Secondaries were flying like crazy between my BB and Kurfurst. I finished off the Zao, and with only about 10% HP left took out the Kurfurst. 2 vs 1. During this time, the points flipped a net 200 and I had captured the mid cap, putting us ahead in points and caps. Due to the weather, I did not know where the two remain enemy CAs were located...my health was low...and one was firing blind and get hits on me. Looking at the score board and time left, I calculated we should win without me having to sink anyone. My vector in the knife fight with Zao and Kurfurst had put me full speed away from the cap...and away from the enemy's other cap. I just kept on hauling. After about a minute of plus cap ticking, I noticed red had entered to take it back. But they couldn't cap and make up the points before time ran out. So I just kept on going. I have several Solo Warrior badges...but this is the first one where I actually felt like I did it. And it really is a team effort. By design or serendipity, the cruiser that went east around that island made it happen. He got deleted by Yamato without doing much damage in return. But he set the stage by putting Yamatos guns to port when I arrived to starboard. Even a non-lethal broadside from Yamato would have reduced my health for easy dispatch by either Zao or Kurfurst. I also figure, considering both the Zao and Kurfurst were on that side, that they were looking for us to appear at the same point. This illustrates that it's not just one's ability to do damage or cap that can make the difference. Just occupying another captain's time and attention...even for a small period of time...can make the difference. It's funny, when I get those games, my damage isn't usually that high, often below average.
