The USS Olympia trip

Back in June of this year, myself, my mother, and my grandfather took a trip down to Philadelphia to visit the Independence Sea Port Museum, where the protected cruiser, the USS Olympia is currently docked. Shes a GORGEOUS ship, and in decent shape given her age, so I thought I'd share a bunch of pics I took while there. :)

 

This was also my very first official warship I've ever visited, so it was a HELL of an experience, I loved every single second of it!

Nice to see the ship open. I'd heard it was closed for a while do to issues with hull leakage.

Nice to see late 19th century 'Steam Donkey' mechanisms used where we now have electric motors.

Elegant design and decoration reflected the beauty of the times.  That era we look upon as 'Steam-Punk' was state-of-art back then.

Great Post; thanks for all the cool info and photos! Loved the old triple wheel used for course correction; can you imagine trying to handle that in the middle of a stormy sea! Thanks Kitsune, really cool post!

Parts of the ship were closed off. Though from what I understand, shes gotten some extensive work done so is mostly ok now. She still needs a dry docking though. =C

She did indeed have wooden decks throughout most of her. Only places I recall her not having those were the open top decks.

Lol yeah, I felt better censoring him because my grandfather is a retired judge. Figured it was a good idea. =P (that, and my mother tends to freak out about that stuff lmbo)

 

I'll be making another album of the USS Becuna, that was docked right next to the Olympia, soon. It took me a while to get those uploaded on my crappy net. x.x

Glad you liked the experience. I'm always a sucker for visiting museum ships. (I should know, I visited over 12 of them.)

+1 for that alone... Tier 2 cruiser with 8" guns as bad as Mikasa's 12", but with the same lol-spam secondaries.
