I honestly am so frustrated with the gameplay at the moment. Last few months were a steady increase in WR then all of a sudden complete tank out. My play style has not changed at all. There are just multiple games in a row, kränkend, high calibers all in losses. People raging at each other. There is something wrong. I can't be the only one noticing this. But my charts show my progression as an inverse U something happened at one point that bottomed out the community. I'm tying to figure an exact date and see if anything changed. Also this was happening before the UK line.

Stop expecting teamplay from random players and you'll be a lot happier.

stop expecting anything and everything. Events and missions set goals that are not helpful to team play.

i like the missions and events,

but people forget to protect caps, escort BBs, and send planes to assist you. they are busy, setting fires, getting citadels and worrying about OIL right now.

I agree. I would stop expecting more than that from them too, but that's a solid start.

He's talking about not having expectations of others. He's not talking about your play. You can try to use teamwork, but since there's no certainty about whether or not others will it's for the best not to expect it.

Add me in-game, I like teamwork.

That's not what he meant when he said "Yeah just play for myself screw everyone else."  He meant IMO that he felt that everyone was playing this way.  And he's not entirely wrong.  That said, I don't think that everyone else is out to screw their team mates.  Some players may be, but I think that the vast majority actually are trying to help the team.  They may just be making bad decisions and doing things that actually are not helping the team (even if they think that they are).

I can tell you think.  When I play DDs, I am very ambivalent about charging into domination mode caps to contest them, because IMO it's a no-win situation.  I might get killed.  Or even if I kill the enemy DD, I'm probably so badly damaged that the rest of my battle I'll be gimped.  Am I acting in a way that's not good for the team when I don't do it?  Perhaps.  But ya know something, I'm not willing to play the sacrificial lamb just so the team's big boys can wrack up their high damage numbers and high XP and credit earnings, while I get squat. Call it selfish all you want, but getting killed or crippled early and doing severely limited damage and so on and getting bad damage, XP, and credits just for a win is not why I jump in a DD to play random battles.  I want to do damage and get kills and earn XP and credits just as much as players of larger ships.  And why should I give up my chance to do that for players who aren't willing to put their boats and their games on the line to help grab a cap?

Why I've almost stopped worrying about winrate and focus on stats I can mostly control (because the only influence they have on my damage done is bailing on me in a cap or folding too fast).

From my view, it doesn't matter how others are playing since I can't affect it. WG can, by shaping the experience in such a way that people have to do certain stuff to succeed. They could make teamwork essential and required - but they don't. They allow players the freedom to choose how they want to play.

Some will choose to play selfishly, others will choose to play selflessly. That's how it goes. If you want teamwork, division with like-minded people. If you don't, just play the way you want.

As for the second paragraph, I don't really care much about how my teammates play. I care a little. I care enough that I would prefer selfless players. That preference isn't particularly strong. I think, "Hey, that's nice," but that's about it. It's nothing deeper for me.

I normally play "selfishly" - to an extent. Sometimes I help people. It depends on other factors, like if they have an anime name, or if I know them from the forums. I'm more inclined to help them in that case. Even then though, it's mostly out of curiosity.

I try my best to support the team effort if I see some members acting and talking as a team. Now when everyone just scatters at the start of a round it's a free for all which usually ends badly.

If you look up the definition of team play in Webster's unabridged.

you will find:

teamplay (noun)

- world of warships

        - the use of your teammates as meat shields while you hope to farm enough damage to carry the match.

I might be alone in this, but I enjoy ranked a lot more than randoms because of the team play. I’m not hyper-competitive about it and don’t bother investing more time in it than I want, but its nice being in a match with 6 players who at least want to win. Ranked mode makes strategy matter at least a little.

Randoms are just incompetence and insanity warring with each other while each team has 3 or 4 ships AFK.

I typically play a lot more during ranked seasons, because randoms just don’t offer a lot of fun matches.

If people could behave like humans and not monkeys ranked would be nice.

Trying to get a bunch of random people to work together is an exercise in herding cats. It never goes well.

The grind kills it. The weird way that WG does ranking means that being able to string together a winning streak matters more than consistent performance, and literally anyone can have a winning streak, so it fosters a grind mentality.

The scale of the matches, the focussed objectives, and the absence of a tier spread all foster a better environment for team play though. Add in Elo-based ranking and make it a full-time game mode (so there is no pressure to grind out rank 1 in X amount of time) and it would be an overall better game mode.

The drivers of the game...grinding for XP do not reward team play....unless everyone plays as a team....and that will happen about as often as a major asteroid strike.

Sometimes you'll see a little team work, like a cruiser warning people that he's about to use his radar, or a DD who lays smoke in a team friendly way. Or the player who tries to come to the aid of a team mate, like a BB who could use some AA DF help, or a BB that needs help against a DD, seen or unseen. Or the CV that tries to spot a hidden enemy DD. Things like that are team work and can be seen from time to time.

But also sometimes a seemingly selfish action can also be team oriented in result, like an Atlanta that sets up in a place the player knows should be great for farming enemy CV planes.

I agree. Divisioning can really help, at least if the players are decent. Otoh, a div of bad players is just as likely to drag down a team.

I try to help the team as much as I can without giving up my chance at a good game, when in randoms. I'm a little more selfless in ranked, but at the same time I won't just play suicidally. I tend to think that the longer I stay alive and contributing, the more I help the team's chances of winning.
