Currently the Yamato BB in her guise is actually the 1945 version which is missing her aa mounted turrets above turret 2 and 3

eh, I'd rather not add more AA into a meta where AA is extremely prevalent

Her AA is pitiful so you may as well.  Won't stop the Tier X carriers from dunking on you when you run around un-escorted.

Maybe she will be this version, or her original we don't know. Also don't forget Yamato is stillthe best or second-best of the tier X BBs so there is no need to buff or change her at all right now. Good research though and catch, just not really needed for the game at this time.

I'm conflicted. As it is, no bonuses, no focus, nothing, Yamato against Midways planes (none of their HP buffs) is 19% per second to shoot them down. This is estimating and guess work a bit on my part, but Yamato is missing from the numbers I find 24 AA guns, likely, 8x3 I'm guessing is on those turrets, those guns in game per unit average a bit over 6 DPS, the missing guns adding, if you round up a little for simplicity, 49 damage, which actually raises the chances against the Midway TB's 2% to just over 21%. That's not adding the 1.3 multiplier for selecting a group to focus, 20% from BFT, 10% from the flag and if you use it for some reason on it manual AA.  Just BFT and focus cranks up the base number to 29.6%, 33.2 with the added AA potentially. However, the upgrades and all at tier 10, Midway TB's should be able to mitigate it down to a more reasonable, using that word loosely here, 27.5% chance to lose a plane every second.

 

But that's where my concern is, that is the number with the most durable aircraft in the game. Shokaku, Enterprise, Lexington, GZ when it's done, these ships still have to fight it. Again, base Yamato number is 22% against Lex, though, this is Lex's planes with Max HP, about the same for Shokaku. That base with the upgrades, goes to 34.8%, add those extra guns, potentially 39%. Happen to have a flag on it likely breeches 40-41, and manual AA may well get it to 45+. Though those are unlikely. And stock, it has a 3 km range on it's shortest range AA. Stock numbers adding that gets you in spitting distance of Montana's AA numbers at 3.5 km (Yamato would have 452 at 3 km, Montana 475 at 3.5 km) which yes, Montana has another 194 DPS, but it's tied up in 20 mm guns that have a 2 km range, and only with AFT and the AA range upgrade do those match that range and even then, Yamato with the same upgrades ends up at 4.4-4.5 km. Those guns when it comes to the most effective AA due to Range, push it closer to rivaling Montana in AA power, only Montana's point blank 20 mm's and additional .5 km on medium range and .2 on long range give it a good boost over. Montana would get about 2% at 41% chance per second, 44-45% if the planes end up in 20 mm range with BFT alone, 57% BFT and focused. Which, side note is why CV's get frustrated bottom tiered and much as we may try to wait on strikes, sometimes literally can't hit anything, because planes aren't getting through.

 

Sure, the effects on tier 10 aircraft, almost negligible, which, can't believe I'm saying this, maybe means we need to look at the strength of that upgrade slot. Maybe 15% with the extra 5 tacked on from the skill is a little too much, but for lower tiers that have to face it, those few guns potentially make trying to attack it a lot closer to if your attacking Montana but don't need to get into 20 mm range.

 

Which is where my conflict lies - at tier 10, that change is fine, I'd even appreciate it for the fact it makes the ship more historical, but it can punish lower tier CV's pretty hard potentially which again comes back to Wargaming needs to seriously look at CV and AA balance and work on finding a better middle ground. The part of me that prefers things more historical says yes, the part that did game design classes and wants balance says no till we fix some things. Unless they simply added them with much lower/no DPS.

Nope.  A lot of ships don't have their entire AA package.  Cleveland would like her quad Bofors back for instance.

Her main turrets WERE AA guns.  With massive range.  Dubious effectiveness though.

Should get them back when she returns to her rightful spot in the light cruiser line at tier 8.
