Personally I think this was a golden opportunity to revisit 'Ruinberg in Space' but that's just me.

I can't shake the feeling that things would only get messy if they tried to make a deal for the Enterprise, but i'm not sure why.

Except, the head guy commercialized it by offering products for sale based on the project and funding a studio that goes beyond producing the project. This is what triggered Paramount/CBS. Good copyright holders leave fan projects alone unless the fans attempt to profit off them (commercializing) then they take actions to protect their IPs.

None of that was a part of the suit.

They would go after a Sci-fi camo specifilly for Enterprise in a heartbeat

They also would get their asses kicked because they do not own the Enterprise.

The only way they would win that suit is if it was very clearly a Star trek thing.

The USS Enterprise  was a Real Ship in the real world Long before 1701 made its debut. I doubt anyone other than the United States own the rights to it. A sci-fi Camo could be sold for our version of the USS Enterprise, as long as the number reference is not incorporated in the Camo version. Being a trekker from the original series it is my opinion the Owners of Star Trek can pound sand on this one.

That's because they're listing specifically, in legal speak, what parts of the Star Trek IP he was using.
