Ships have a concealment value. This value can change depending on whether the ship is on fire or has just fired its guns.

You'll see a ship when:

  •  You're inside his concealment range and he isn't obstructed by smoke or an island
  • You're outside his normal concealment range but inside his gun firing range and he's just fired
  • Someone else on your team is spotting him

You won't see a ship when:

  • You're outside of his concealment range
  • There's smoke and / or an island between you and him

Not that kind of disappearing, I'm talking about outright vanishing, but stil able to fire weapons and move.

So are we. But, if you're sure you're talking about something else, please provide a replay of it happening so we can review and explain it.

You have the LOS and you are firing at them and they just disappear.  No smoke.  No island or mountain. Just vanish.

*sigh*

Concealment. Range. IE, they have a concealment range, which is listed in the port, and you're outside the range.

How do these ships keep disappearing and reappearing???

Its called game mechanics and its a rather complicated in game visual dependent on , ship , flags,Islands, smoke,Camo Range, firing your guns , although the latter is your supposed to be visable when you fire your guns unless in smoke but I have seen instances were this does not happen .. so it's not perfect

Are you referring to bots in co-op?

Spotting mechanics work exactly the same for Bots.

If the ships don't immediately render in view when they are already firing but are detected on the mini-map and showing as their appropriate type icon, lag (''desync'') or a graphics issue is probably your culprit.

It can happen for ships as close as a kilometer away that are already shooting at you; similarly, the white target ring just may not work in some matches when you try to ''X'' certain red ships.

You may also see ships that stutter when they do render; again, lag or a grahics issue, either yours or theirs - remember the server is handling simultaneously hundreds of two-dozen two-way data connections.

And yeah, it quite often completely sucks while costing your team the game; for their titles, all admittedly F2P, WG isn't known for renting top of the line space or hops.

They stopped firing and you are outside of the enemy ship's concealment range so they go back into undetected.

As Lert explained, a ship has a concealment (or detection) range at which it can be spotted.  That range is variable depending on circumstances.  Let us look at a specific example.

An Atlanta with 3% concealment camouflage and a Captain with Concealment Expert and Advanced Firing Training will be detected at 9.6km normally.  If he is on fire, he will be detected at 11.6km until he puts the fire out, at which point his detection range will drop back to 9.6km.  Similarly, if he fires his guns, he will be detected out to 13.3km (the increased range with AFT).  Twenty seconds after he stops firing his guns, his detection will drop back to normal.

In order to see that Atlanta, you would need to be within 9.6km of him normally, 11.6km of him if he is on fire, or 13.3km of him if he has fired his guns recently.  If you are within 13.3km of him, but outside 9.6km and he has fired his guns, you will see him.  If he stops firing, he will disappear after 20 seconds because his detection drops back to normal, and you are more than 9.6km away.  Similarly, if you are outside of 9.6km of him but within 11.6km of him and he is on fire, you will see him.  If he puts out the fire, you will no longer be able to see him.

If you are beyond those ranges, but one of your teammates are within those ranges and can see him, you and everyone else on your team will be able to see him.  If that teammate dies, gets outside of those ranges or loses line of sight, he will no longer be able to see him, so your whole team will lose sight of him unless someone else can see him.

Thus, in answer to your question, any of those situations would cause a ship that you can "see" to "disappear."  It is all normal game spotting mechanics.

Also, keep in mind that it is not always obvious that someone is in or behind smoke when you are in binocular view, so it is sometimes easy to think they are "in the open" when, in fact, they are in or behind smoke.  The same is true when you are the one in smoke.   Since smoke works both ways, you cannot see out.  If you don't realize you are in smoke because you are in binocular view and you drifted into a smoke cloud, you will not be able to see targets outside the smoke unless someone else is spotting them for you.

It's concealment mechanics.  For example, Destroyer X has a 5.2 km concealment range, and a 9.6km main battery gun range.  If he fires at you, or anyone else, and you're more than 5.2km but less than 9.6km from him, you can see him for the next 20 seconds. That's called 'gun bloom', which makes him visible out to max gun range for 20 seconds.  However, after 20 seconds, if he doesn't fire his main battery again, and isn't on fire, he will go back to 5.2 km and he will 'disappear' from your viewpoint.

If you're inside 5.2 km, and you have LOS on him, you should be able to see him, except for in the case of smoke.
