A fun and engaging new perspective on carrier gameplay

Hi, I've been playing around flying my carrier planes from the plane perspective (the 'artillery' camera)

Funny enough I found it on the whole a lot more enjoyable than the standard top down view. The graphics, especially with the latest effects update, are very beautiful and immersive when viewed this way.

It is much more fun and engaging to actually pilot my planes around in a 3D world than to watch colored icons move around a 2D map. It is quite  thrilling to watch enemy ships explode as you fly past them.

Here are a few vids from some live games. I hope you enjoy them, and suggest you try this out.

I actually like that perspective a lot more!

But doesn't the view always default back to top down mode?

Do you find it easier or tougher to land strikes from that perspective?

It's much harder to play well in it, but it is certainly the most visually appealing way to run a CV.

NICE!

An even more pathetic way to play the EASIEST ship in the game.   Congrats.

Now go practice in coop for 100 matches til you master cross dropping that will allow you to kill 9 out of 10 ships with impunity, meanwhile you sit in the back of your team in complete safety 90% of a match all the while dealing certain death TO MULTIPLE SHIPS AT THE SAME TIME!!

Wow thanks for a heads up on making THAT impossible gameplay even better!!!!!!!!!

what's your problem? How do you even see CVs after only 16 battles? It seems like you're just a pathetic forum troll who's either (a) A BB and DD player who needed a troll account for attacking CVs. (b) A troll who joined the forums and found the most controversial topic. or (c) A seal clubber who made this account 4 years ago, played it a bit, then went ahead and decided to use it to troll the forums, either after he got banned himself, or is using it as a cover just in case his trolling gets him banned.

Not only that, but cross dropping is much harder then "100 co-op battles" when fighting a good DD captain it requires near perfect skill/timing to pull off, but you're just a troll, so you either haven't tried it yourself, did try it yourself on co-op bots and found it worked great on bots. Or watched a professional like Notser do it and thought to yourself "wow this looks really OP." I can tell you as a fact that it's not, the easiest way to play the game is as a secondary build BB, sit near a chokepoint, and rip massive chunks out of enemy ship who try to pass with your machine gun IJN/KM secondaries. The hardest way to play is as a CV, specifically a Tier 8 CV as that's where most of the professional players reside and where AA gets buffed massively.

Also, ever thought that trolling is annoying to read?

To make the view work I have the 'disable shift for carriers' box unchecked in settings and I set my artillery camera to a button other than shift so I can use shift click to set multiple waypoints without changing the view. As long as you do that you can play both the carrier and the planes in 3D mode.

I would say no aspect of actually playing the game is easier in any way, just more fun.

Some random thoughts on gameplay:

From time to time people suggest adding things like high and low altitude as a gameplay mechanic. Playing this way I discovered that the planes actually already fly at different altitudes. You can see that pretty clearly in the scene with dive bombers and torpedo bombers attacking a carrier at the same time. If there was actually a game mechanic where altitude made a difference for things like fighter interception it would be intuitive to understand playing in 3D mode because you can actually see it.

In the same way flying behind mountains or clouds that actually hide your planes would be easy to incorporate flying this way.

Because you can only really control one squadron at a time, to use multiple squadrons I just used the escort ability to set my fighters to escort the bombers and have all the bomber squadrons following one lead squadron that I control directly.  This turns out to be quite fun because then you have to set up a little formation for your planes to fly in and give some thought where the best position for each squadron in the formation should be.  And of course it looks really cool to see them flying together in formation.

One of things I like the least, especially about higher tier CV play is micromanaging so many squadrons that I don't get time to think or enjoy their attacks because I always need to check on the next squadron. Chaining them all together into one effort feels more enjoyable because  I can concentrate on one things and enjoy the fireworks as the attacks go in.

Right now this is only really feasible at tiers 4 and 5 because there is no fighter strafing and no ships with super powerful AA, which are really hard to avoid in 3D mode because of differences in situational awareness, reaction time, and simultaneous control of multiple squadrons. Strafing if anything seems more ridiculous from this perspective because basically you watch 3 squadrons of planes at three different altitudes simultaneously explode in 2 seconds to planes flying in a straight line and firing straight ahead of them.

Here is another vid if you enjoyed the first two:

P.S. If you don't like trolls then don't feed them!

I'm really hoping WG includes some kind of 3D mode mechanic during the probably never gonna happen forthcoming promised UI rework for CV's.  Probably won't start putting any real effort into CV's until the rework, as I don't really find the top down view very engaging or exciting from a visual perspective.

Nice editing and music selection.  Thank you Sound, Thank you Lighting!  May I recommend Nabucco's,  'Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves'?  A beautiful piece that is Perfect for these replays, a melody that starts with gentle foreboding but rises to unabashed hope of Victory.  It is resolute.  Enjoy!

Again, nicely done. 1+ Sir!
