Interesting though, will have to watch it a few times to get the full impact of how and why they put it together this way... Does make it easier to tell the story without any backstory. I liked the film. I remember when I took an old friend and retired co-worker, a decorated Normandy veteran still living today, who landed on Juno Beach, to the première of ''Saving Private Ryan''. After the first 3 minutes, he was having memory flashbacks and the tears started. He sat through the whole movie, and when it ended, he turned to me and said ''That was how it was. Maybe now I can start coping with it all''. After a lifetime of ups and downs, his wounds were still there, raw, for all of us to see. as were those of my grandfather, father and uncles who had served in two wars, and as I see my grandson's, who served in a third war. William Tecumseh Sherman had it right when he said ''War is Hell''. Never forget. Honor them.

It was a risky move playing with timelines in such a fashion with Dunkirk, and it also assumes a minimum level of intelligence on the part of the audience. I felt it payed off well. Along with the utter lack of typical Nolan Exposition which was refreshing. This is what drove me a bit nuts with Saving Private Ryan and made it feel less authentic. Too many 40yr old men discussing the what the Germans were going to do next.
