2,506 [SYN] Kuckoo Members 6,177 posts 14,455 battles Report post #1 Posted September 3, 2017 Hit 43C (110F) today where I live. Was even hotter yesterday, 46C (115F) and it reached 41C (106F) in San Francisco, a new all-time record high. So hot you step outside and the air is this muggy, hazy white. Start walking and you immediately feel hotter just by the air moving past as you walk. Not a cloud in the sky but visibility was only about 5 miles, if that. For anyone familiar with the San Francisco bay area; Usually the GF and I head out to Pescadero Beach or another further south on weekend mornings. We leave early to beat the traffic and have an easy drive, but today it was evident we didn't leave early enough. We were on northbound 280 approaching Hwy 92, and there was already a stationary line of cars on the westbound exit lane before even getting to the merge. We both said "screw this, no beach today" and continued northward, and as we passed Hwy 92 there was a solid mass of stationary cars on the westbound lanes of the highway as far east as we could see. This was at 0930. Basically, everyone and their mother in the east bay and inland was headed to Half Moon Bay. Never seen anything like it that early on a Saturday morning. Many people here aren't used to this kind of heat.

In the big scheme of things, have to be thankful - heart goes out to all those hit by the tragedy of Harvey in Texas, particularly cities like Corpus Christi & Houston & the city hosting the burning chemical plant. No kidding. Much worse things are happening elsewhere, and here I am whining about how unusually hot it is in a beautiful region that gets fabulous weather almost all year long. Don't recall another heat wave quite as intense, and I've lived here forever.

Having to wear a jacket mornings and evenings. Last night it hit 48f as our low and we didn't go past 81f today. Guess we got your cool weather. Not having to use the AC for most of August is going make a light utility bill.

Different kinda heat down here though, it's so muggy it's hard to breath. Last week, we finally got a little break. We needed it. As well, I vacationed for a week in Florida in August 2014 and the temperatures there got up to around 120 Fahrenheit. It was so hot, that a Puerto Rican guy working at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter said it was hot, and when the Puerto Rican guy says it's hot, then you'd better believe it. To be fair, climate and weather are definitely linked, but record highs are not always indicative of climate change if they are isolated events. What people fail to realize is that we are seeing sustained increases in record highs, as well as the frequency in which these highs are attained.
