For a long time my favorite T-5 BB was the Kongo. Though I still like her, and think she's still a great ship, the Iron Duke has stole my heart. As a WW1 WW2 warship fan, I was always fascinated with the Iron Duke class BBs, and their history.I figured a ship named the Iron Duke, must be pretty bad @$$.and in real life she was indeed bad @$$, as the captain and crew of the German BB Konig found out at Jutland.

Just like the real Duke, the World of Warships Duke is a beast, and is now my favorite T-5 BB, like I hoped it would be. It's nice and tanky like the Konig, but has a meaner, more accurate punch. If you're sub average, to just barely average when it comes to playing BBs like I am. this ship is for you, as it's pretty forgiving, and will give you pretty decent games. If you're a really smart, and highly skilled BB player, this will be like a weapon of mass destruction, and the ultimate seal clubbing tool, if you enjoy making life hell for early tier noob BB players, especially if they're playing the New York,

The Duke is pretty good. I like her now that I've got her fully upgraded. :Smile_great:

Is it a great ship in theory? Yes. In practice? Not really. From my experience with tier V and VII ships, nothing at tier V can be a seal-clubbing tool, or a noob-friendly ship, as long as it's facing an adequate Belfast or Scharnhorst player. Personally, I'd rather take the Bellerophon or Orion over the Iron Duke any day, given that they're also great ships, and actually have good matchmaking.

I'm keeping my Iron Duke in case ranked for T5 rolls out or just for random battle shenanigans.

I've not tried the Duke yet... But it's gonna be hard for it to surpass Texas in my eyes. Esp since Texas is a premium with premium perks.

Only played the Duke a little so far, but nothing about it has changed my mind... Kongo is still my waifu.

I was just not having any luck with it.  I was getting citadeled from the front like crazy.  Its guns are good at midrange but I was being focus fired like crazy.  I couldnt hide anywhere.....once the newness wears off I will try the ship again.

Yes the Kongo rules...

I'm liking the challenge with the Duke but I'll feel a bit handicapped until I can get the captain skills up to 10+. Time to haul up the pennants.

[apart from which you just have to love a ship named Iron Duke]

I feel the Iron Duke is essentialy an Orion a tier higher (with just a bit more AA, secondaries and slightly better turret arcs). So if you love the Duke, the Orion is probably stronger tier for tier.

That said, I cant get the AP of the british BBs to function proper. I ended up hitting a flat broadside myogi (one of the weakest armored BBs far and wide) at 1.9km and fired a full AP broadside into her waterline. 9 out of 10 shells hit. All were regular penetrations (no overpens, shatters, bounces) but also not a single citadel. And the total damage was about 11k... I would have done more damage with any other BBs AP even when I only connect 2-3 shells but 1 citadel (or just 3-4 regular pens). Sure this is an extreme exsample but aside from cruisers with the citadel directly touching the outer armor at VERY close range, I couldnt score any citadels with neither the Orion, Dukes or even QEs guns whatsoever. Especially not at plunging range (the actual historical and also in game strong point for slow overheavy AP shells that british BBs use)!

So yeah I guess I understand why so many ppl use HE on them. Not that I think thats a great way to learn for higher tiers...

In a limited run so far am not impressed with the ID. Had some bizarre AP performance but the He is loaded with Napalm apparently in RN BB's.

lthink l will wait a bit and give it another go when the rush slows down on RN bb's.

Hey

As I have said elsewhere; the Iron Duke is garbage.  Holds no comparison to the Konig, and is not as good as Kongo even.  Should have been at T4 maybe.

So far, Iron Duke's have been pretty great at eating my torpedoes. :Smile_trollface:

the rudder speed and turning radius feels quite bad, yeah.

I haven't taken a detailed look at the specs, so it might only be perception, but Iron Duke feels like it is awful at evading.

They're different.

Konig is good at killing cruisers, while also tanking everything thrown at it

Kongo is good at running around the map and bringing firepower where it is needed, which allows it to carry games slightly better than the others

Iron Duke is fantastic at farming damage with HE and fires, although it won't win matches with damage alone.

Have to agree here.

It's a slug to maneuver. The turrets turn like molasses. The armor is meh - actually sub-meh. And, its a large target. The only thing good is the guns -  and even they are literally hit or miss (reminds me of the Fuso).

So if you're looking for something that is almost entirely RNG based for how you do in a match - Iron Puke is for you.

Solid ship.  Not quite Kongo-status, but a level above the New York and, for me, edges out over the Koenig as well.

Slow turret rotation even with expert marksman & upgrade. Rudder shift is pretty bad also. I'll take the Kongo, Konig and Texas over her any day of the week. I think the New York is probably better too but I don't have it anymore.

if you think you can't   carry a match in iron duke, you don't know how to play her.    it is like saying zuchini is  bad at carrying.        heck, most kongo drivers are lousy and easy to burndown as well.   after 5 matches,  it is my highest performing t5 BB, and all I use is HE.

Just my amateur opinion, but I really like all the new UK BB's (except haven't tried Monarch or Conqueror yet), and Iron Duke is no exception. More responsive than NY & TX (not saying much) and easily out-guns a Kongo. Brit HE is thermonuclear. Turret rotation is horrible, so planning turns well is a must.

I'm still butthurt about the artists screwing up her appearance, though. As a historical, she needs her two funnels, straight without German-looking deflector caps. /rant

This right there seems to sum up the low-tier British BB. Very low skill floor, but also a rather low skill ceiling and surprisingly limited carry potential in spite of their status as the best firestarters in the game at the moment. After Flamu's profanity-laced rant about Orion, I had expected them to reek far more of OP-ness. But, even with my rather limited experience with them, I'm of the opinion that they're not as good as the hype. Orion stands out by virtue of the sheer ridiculousness of its HE shells, but (and I'm speculating here, because I don't have Iron Duke yet) I'd still rather bring a Kongo or even a König into a tier 6 or 7 game than an Iron Duke, just by virtue of the former's mobility and the latter's well-roundedness. Iron Duke simply doesn't have much to show for being a tier higher than Orion. I will keep Iron Duke because it's my favorite class of all of His Majesty's dreadnoughts, but I expect to be distinctly underwhelmed by it, at least until tier 5 matchmaking improves. Good old Kongo is still the queen of all the tier 5 battleships, with König nipping at her heels.

Iron Duke is a FABULOUS-looking ship, though, so there is that.

Why in blue blazzes did WG mess with the orginal two stacks? They give us a phony configuration.  Really, I don't need to see AA guns.

Just finished my grind with the Iron Duke.  Can't say I'm a fan because I'm of the opinion it is OP, as it is dangerously competitive at tier 7.  I was bottom tier tier most of the time, and out of 17 matches, I survived 15 of them.  And I had match where the game crashed my computer and another where the map wouldn't load, so for me, it had a 100% survival rate when I was actually playing it.

Just look at this match, not only did I top the charts, beating out a Scharnhorst and a Nelson, but the rival team's Iron Duke beat out a Nelson and a Nagato.  The ship maneuvers very well, hits hard with HE and can set 2 fires a salvo.  I set 16 fires in this match, my Dunkerque needs all the fire chance boosters to match that.  The Kongo or New York can't compare.
