Featuring WW2 vehicles, etc. as its main deal. Grave of the Fireflies, which is about the aftermath of WW2, need not apply.
Arp and Haifuri do apply despite being modern.

Ones I know:

Girls und Panzer
Izetta the Last Witch
HaiFuri: High School Fleet
Arpeggio of Blue Steel: Ars Nova
Kancolle
Strike Witches (I think? It's based on the Night Witches, but I really am iffy if it applies)
Pumpkin Scissors
Valkyria Chronicles
Koiuta [Princess and the Pilot, Pilot's Love Song]
Zipang
The Cockpit

Pretty much any WW II Related show on History Channel

  • CGI = animation
  • Plot and commercial break cliffhangers > Actually what happened.

Strike Witches is an alternate universe where an alien invasion basically halts the beginning of WWII and the nations end up working together to defend Earth from them.  So yeah, it counts.  The witches' Striker Packs are all based on WWII aircraft and the characters are alternate world versions of famous WWII fighter pilots, plus WWII warships play a prominent role.

If we're going by the stipulation of "using WWII vehicles" then there's a couple other anime that would qualify:

Familiar of Zero(It's a pretty important plot point, but beyond that the show has nothing to do with WWII)

Drifters(there's actually a bit more connection here, as certain characters are historical persons from WWII)

That's like, WW1.

It becomes a mesh of WWI and WWII about halfway through the show.  I mean, Panzer IIIs and V2 rockets, not-France being occupied by not-Germany while elements of their military escape overseas like the Free French forces, etc.

Ever seen Steamboy? It's an animated film from a long time ago, with some of the best animations I've ever seen. It actually premiered in US theaters at one point.

Then there's Last Exile, WWII-esqe (steampunk?) in the skies. This animated series actually has a sequel too.

These are not a lot compared to the total output of anime each season, each year.

One can also ask why

There are so many moe anime.

There are so many yokai anime.

There are so many sports anime.

There are so many high school anime.

There are so many game related anime.

There are so many fantasy anime.

...WW2 anime are kinda rare. I'm looking for them mostly.

Also, I have to slap myself. How the crapdid I forget WW2 + Ace Combat, told from the perspective of the Enemy Ace squadron...
