My impression of World of Warships after a week... a Mexican Standoff

So World of Warships is pretty much like a Mexican standoff with islands.  Pretty much a bloodbath were everyone eats it except for a couple that hobble off.

A few things would be nice:
- Would be nice to have a ingame voice confirmation for ship speed ("Ahead Full Aye", "Ahead 1/3rd Aye".
- Would be nice to have get rid of the voice confirmation that your getting pawned "Ship taking heavy damage?  Really?  You don't say!......"
- Would be nice for the crew to announce when a ship is in weapons range, not just spotted (sneaky ships coming up from the stern.  Its why real ships have dedicated lookouts

- I've gotten a bunch of spyware from finding mods for this thing.  Thing is that mods really do given combat advantages.  If a mod is so good that it gives an advantage to combat, it really should be an automatic ingame feature anyway.

Do people use the abbreviation WoW for the game?

never download anything outside of Mods & add on forum here https://forum.worldofwarships.com/forum/170-mods-and-addons/

if  you're getting spyware, that means you're looking on 3rd party websites that isn't approved by wargaming

Don't use mods then. At the very least, learn to play the game first.

Personally, I don't use mods at all.

in higher tiers there's a whole different meta in play. this involves hiding behind islands, reversing off the map, hanging back and occasionally sniping, and trying to stay afloat.

you ask for more voice confirmation for two game mechanics, and for one that needs to be removed. WG has not responded to this in the full year I've been playing. both mechanics you ask for voice confirmation are easy to spot... ships speed and engine setting is displays lower left corner, and the lines for range and detection are displayed on the minimap.

Sounds like you're looking for mods in the wrong neighborhoods.  Plus mods really don't give you that much of an advantage.  I personally don't use them, but like Major Renegade said, there's a place to get legit ones.  Turn on the alternate battle interface, smoke timer, and a couple other things in the settings and you should be set.

You don't need mods to do well in this game.

I'm no super Unicum but I do decently well for myself, all while running a 100% vanilla client.

If you insist on using them, I'd suggest sticking to the ones that are WG approved in the mods section.

I wouldn't mess around with mods from 3rd party sights. They often are full of spyware (which you learned the hard way), and could quite possibly be illegal depending on what they do, which can result in an account lock for you.

Don't use mods from unapproved sites. If they give you a distinct advantage, they're likely illegal. Some, however, are quite nice, and are approved. The big one is Aslains. I just started using it for a few things, and while my fps took a hit (had to compensate), seeing what ship is talking in chat, what the torpedo range is on every DD, and the HP status of all ships in game is really useful. However, don't go out on your own looking for mods. Also, the vanilla client is pretty good. They've added some of the much needed mods to the game client too, and I imagine most of the rest are on the way. Since you're new, might want to just try with the plain client (make sure you have alternative interface turned on in the settings, that's the one that gives you ships types, names, and HP. Don't know why anyone would play with out it.

WOWS is warships, WOW is warcraft. WOT is tanks, and WOWP is the problem child, planes. In addition, since this is a military based game, everything has abbreviations. Probably best to learn those (we should have a pinned topic that contains the abbrevations we use).

For the voices, don't tunnel, and you'll have all that info easily (minimap with range circle, speed indicator on HUD). For example, I don't look where I'm driving. I'm tunneled on what I'm shooting, with one eye on the minimap. That gives what ships are around, and what I need to avoid. I steer by the minimap, and if something pops up I need to shoot, I see it on the map. Also, "enemy destroyer spotted" ALWAYS get my attention. This does have it's drawbacks (I may or may not have hit multiple islands that are really small on the minimap.), but I mostly works for me.

Yup, that one you can get with just the in game alternate interface.

I have that voice muted in most of my voice mods =P. It annoying to hear that voice over and over in just under a min when the entire enemy team appears  at the game start. The minimap is good enough for me

No, I mean the team list with HP updated in real time. Very nice for judging overall health of team, the HP of that unspotted enemy BB, for example. Obviously the alt interface does that, but they have to be in your field of view. This way, you don't have to look all over the map for that info.

Oh, that's what you meant.  Yeah, that's one that would be nice to have built into the game.

as others have said, be very careful looking for mods. if you're getting spyware, and the mod gives you a "combat advantage" there's a good chance you're going to be getting an account lock. WG doesn't take kindly to cheating. if you want mods, look for the WG approved ones from safe sites. they've cracked down on illegal mods, and they do know how to track those that use them.

there's nothing a legal mod could provide that i haven't already learned through experience anyways.

It's usually a good idea to learn to play the game first before bothering with mods.  After a week of playing, you are still very much in the womb.  I'd say do at least a 1000 games or more before you even start thinking of mods.

There are no mods that give an advantage in play, just to enhance to look or sound of your particular client.  They're purely aesthetic.  There were (are?) mods that give play advantages but are illegal (aim calculators, aim bots, etc).  Downloading those are risky enough because they tend to have a little "extra baggage" that you spoke of, and if you're caught using them in the game you'll get banned, so be aware.
