Was thinking about starting up the German line of B&B's, just in time for the Scharnhorst to go on sale for roughly 30 bucks! What do you think German BB captians and Sharnhorst owners, worth it as a captain trainer?

Thanks for your help and insight!

I got the Tirpitz for the WG anniversary sale at 15% off. I don't regret it, and it's a great captain trainer for KMS BBs T8-T10, not so much for T3-T7 since they don't have insane secondary range.

Yup, great boat. Like her more than the Tirpitz personally. Plus t7 is a pretty solid place to be right now.

they're not going to do any miracles, but they're just punchy enough to get what you need to do, done. cruisers should be your primary, but its not uncommon to salvo a t9 battleship for 6-9k dmg

Cruiser killers, can struggle against BBs but I actually use the HE quite a lot to great results.

The Scharn is a very fun ship.

However, Tirpitz - with the right commander skills is hand down a better XP/credit machine.  Granted - it sees more up-tiered games, but it weathers T10 like a champ.

They are both excellent ships - and I'd recommend having both in your port - but if I had to choose just one, it would be Tirpitz without a doubt.

I have both ships.  I bought Tirpitz ages ago, before Scharnhorst came out, and it is a good solid and fun ship to play.  It really earns credits and trains captains well...

But, I love the Shiny Horse.  It is just hilariously fun virtually all the time - you start the battle by whacking dds, then focusing cruisers and bounce a bunch of battleship AP.  Late battle, which you should survive to, you chase down those lumbering Colorados who know what is coming but cant do anything about it - torping other ships in a battleship is just fun.  And you get paid well for the pleasure, as it is a very solid credit earner too.

If I had my time again, I'd just get the Scharnhorst.  But, having both isnt exactly bad (particularly when the Yamamoto campaign requires tier 8+ credit and XP grinds... :)).

Learned alot from her and she got me my first 19pt captain with Tirpitz following closely at 18pts. She's cheaper, more versatile than Tirpitz and I can't say enough good things about her.

I drive it when I feel like just wading into the enemy and causing trouble brawling.  It is hilarious to have secondaries burning one ship, main guns working on another, and sending torps out either side at two more.  Seem to be able to handle quite a bit of damage if angled right.

She is literally one of the most fun ships in the game, least from my PoV. She has EXCELLENT armor, torps, good secondaries, great speed. But her guns are in between cruiser and battleship with 11 inch guns. So against a lot of bow on targets you have to use some HE spam. HOWEVER, good fire chance, 20 second reload. Just have to know when to switch ammo more like a cruiser. But you can throw a Bismarck captain in there and it will work just awesome. AND as a bonus, she also works as a decent cruiser skipper trainer.

If ya can't tell, the Shinyhorse(nickname) is my fav ship.

Warspite(I know mouse-chan will hang me by my fingernails for that)

Indianapolis

Tirpitz

Ishizuichi(even though I like her, Kii is coming and she looks like a blast).

If you want to have the best ship in game to sail around and have fun don't think twice. Buy the Scharnhost

This actually sums up the German BB play style. Yes, especially at lower tiers, they can engage enemy BB's and higher tiers with the bigger gun upgrades can again, but really, at their core, these things punish cruisers and even DD's, especially with the caliber/4 HE pen - much as it may be heresy have a captain that I'm testing with IFHE in some lower tier stuff.

Few quick notes for Scharn, and some that tie to the German BB's as a whole -

  • Do not rely on the torps, at 6km, they have limited use and get knocked out quite a bit.
  • Angled ship or thin target at close range (UK cruisers) HE is your friend, AP being smaller at some tiers is more likely to fail at penning and at close range thinner targets you WILL over pen the citadel with HE. Did that too many times against Leanders that then torped me.
  • DO.NOT.SNIPE. These ships are brawlers, try to find where your allies are going so you have some support to go in. Their guns are not dialed in for long range accuracy, nor is their armour which while at close range, Citadel's against German BB's are at best rare, at long range, plunging fire will wreck them it comes down through the deck.
  • AFT/BFT/Secondary armament mod in slot 2 - this is the strength of German BB, especially after the range buffs they just got. Scharnhorst gained about .5 km, maybe a little more out to 8km fully built and flagged, Bismarck out to 11.3, and these guns can whittle down opponents fairly effectively. Most would suggest manual secondaries as well, especially at tier 8 for the accuracy boost, but depends a little who you are and how you play, I'd rathe when I hae a target on each side of my ship hit both, but the accuracy boost can be nice.
