Torpedo Detection

So here I am sailing along in my Scharnhorst when- "ALARM! TORPEDOES!"

I look to my left and see eight (or nine, it was a lot!) of metal fishes heading my way.

Except they were like .5 km away from me.

Why wasn't I able to see them until there was like no time to react?

They were Kagero torps, and I am not sure which ones.

Can someone link the reaction time thread that I remember seeing here a while back?

I want to see if this situation was my own overextending stupidity, or some odd glitch (it happens after patches sometimes).

Not saying it is a glitch/bug, just curious.

Were there any smoke screens nearby?

Or islands blocking sight?

The detect distances are all on wikki and in the game if you select torps for the DD in the ship particulars. Kag is well over 1km, not at home so cant look it up.

There is no torpedo that has 0.5km detection range.  Even Tier II Umikaze's torps have 0.7km detection range stock or 0.8km upgraded

1.6km detection for the stock, 1.7km for the upgraded ones.  IJN torps simply have terrible detection range.

Khab's ET-56 torps are 0.6km detection... or at least they were after 0.6.8.

I know that they were Kagero torps.

There were no smoke screens, and no islands.

Maybe it was just a case of terrible obliviousness.

They had been detected, but that ship also has the best concealment at its tier (right?).

All I know is that I saw the torps far enough away to react, but too close to actually do anything about it.

Just one of those moments.

Also, if that Kagero reads this, that was a damn fine torp spread.

I never saw the detection range on the wiki?

No IJN torpedo has detection range that short.

This is a case of you being caught unawares and likely misjudging distances.

I am pretty sure it's because you are not looking for them.

Most likely.

It was late at night so definitely not my prime reaction times. (or motivation)

We all have that time. I lost count how many times I've been LOLtorped by something detected miles away. In DDs no less. I knew torps are coming and just can't connect the sight and sound to the reaction to get moving. Age probably has something to do with it too. :)

Ha!

That is true.

Well, it was a pretty solid way for the game to say "Go to sleep Viper, you are tired".

That has me wondering, because I've never consciously checked. Does the audio warning happen immediately upon detection, or at a certain distance? I would think at a certain distance.

The audio warning from your captain occurs for any torpedo within around 5km of you that is spotted, including allied torpedoes. The beeping starts at that point too, though naturally is quiet at longer ranges and most players miss it until they're closer.

EDIT: You posting makes me wonder if he got nailed by a carrier drop, though the OP is convinced it was a Kagero that got him so I'm not sure how likely this would be.

Although I don't know exact number, but certain distance for sure.

You won't get any warning right away for detected torps which are still miles away(detected by allies), but would hit you if you keep going straight.

However, the warning distance appears not be 1-2km (especially warning on the HUD).

Problem is, we sometime miss the warnings especially in a heat of battle, drowsiness, DUI, etc.

Also, sometime well placed torp appears from nowhere when we are turning...

Several times a month I'll get blasted by torps with no warning.  No visible trails, no alarm, nothing.  Just bang.   Team mates will say they saw them, but they never registered on my client.   It is believed to be a lag type error of some sort.   Not exactly what OP saw, but could explain short warning time.

Is the OP color blind?  I ask because I've had twice now since they changed the lighting a few patches ago, where I had a warning, looked in the direction of the incoming torps, and could not see them until I was right on top of them.  The color, mixed with the lighting makes them hard to see even when looking right at them.  After the second time I did some adjusting to the color blind settings I use and I haven't seen it so far.

I have the mod that colors the trails yellow, so I don't miss so many.  I still get hit by more than I should, but, I blame that on general spud-ity and still under 500 games total so far.

I use a similar mod Mavfin, it does make them a bit easier to spot when you are casually looking around.  Now it won't stop ambush tactics from sending you to a watery grave.  I made the mistake the other night of being too focused upon a target and I sailed around the tip of an island without giving it a second thought.  It wasn't until a few seconds later I noticed the DD that was sitting on the other side waiting for me.

It was a Kagero.

I checked the post battle reports as well as the reply.

The kill feed says Kagero.

No, I am not color blind... Good thought though :p

I think that this was just a case of obliviousness on my end.

Or quite possibly some issues with computer-server-user communication issues.

Fair enough. Most people don't do this, and that's where claims like "Shimakaze sank me with OP torpedoes with a 1km detect range, nerf it now-- when said player was actually hit by a Fletcher" come from.

Also if you're sailing towards torpedoes, not necessarily straight on, that reaction time gets cut down real short.  Why DDs love overaggressive / unaware players.
