Ahoy my fellow captains!

While browsing the news this morning, I saw this article about a link to Action Video Gaming and the brain.  Personally, I think it's a load of horse crap, but it is an interesting read.

enjoy.

Two brain scans used to measure a portion of the brain.  The interval was 90 hours.

90 HOURS!

I've been playing video games for 35 YEARS, including FPS's and other "action" genres.  By their conclusion, I should have NO Hippocampus left...

Their study obviously doesn't match up with reality.

i'm not going to look them up (already late to get going) but there have been other studies (real studies) that show that action video games are actually good for your brain in moderate doses, contrary to popular belief.

Classic example of confirmation bias.  The 'researchers' already knew what they would 'find' so their 'facts' got shoehorned in so that they would corroborate their pre-inclination.

This study looks half assed at best.

Not aware of any legitimate studies that show clear negative effects though several have show clear positive effects of video games (with reasonable moderation of course). Though not all types of video games offer the same positive benefits as others.

Think it depends on what type of action game you play as well since some require more strategy and are not all that violent. The study likely was based on some of the far more violent games like Call of Duty where you run around blasting everything in sight without really needing all that much of a plan.

WoWs you have the historical factors to consider since they factor into game somewhat, you have to plan where you are going, keep track of what ships are in battle and where they are, you have to compensate speed and distance when taking your shots.

Vehicle vs Vehicle like WOWs, WOT, and WOWP type games I think are healthier than people killing people are since I remember reading some research involving real life soldiers where often there is like a mental block they have to push through in training in order to gun another human down so video games where you do that I guess could tamper with that built in system in your brain that normally is the reason you feel it would be wrong to go kill someone face to face in cold blood.

Where as if you have a vehicle that is a humanless drone you can in a clear conscience destroy knowing you have not harmed anyone.

Everything is bad for your brain.

Chess is actually very good for your brain especially if you play in a chess club or better yet tournaments.

The actual study the article cites lists the effects of action games as being either good or bad, but ultimately dependent upon the user's own hippocampal activity and navigation path. The article only states the bad effects and leaves out the part about the difference between people, which qualifies as selective bias by omission. There's nothing more than clickbait, propaganda, and fake news in the article. The study itself, however, is an interesting read, and would be the much better option if anyone's interested.

Far as I read it, it's only bad for the simple-minded drone types. Y'know, the kind of person that works in fast food, or the like and you order something that isn't one of the easy numbered meals or is but in any way customized and you can see the smoke pouring from their ears as their brain over heats because they are only capable of select pre-programmed actions that are easily done and completely mindless. You ask them a question a store and you get a blank stare if it's not "Where can I fin this" in an easily identifiable aisle. Like some former coworkers at an auto parts warehouse where some were so pre-programmed to certain things you put a box in the way they trip on it instead of go around.

It's only a threat to gamer's who play CoD and Battlefield and HAVE to use a specific gun, in a specific area of a map. In this game, it'd be the guy that has to use x ship, and always on say ocean, go to C, and can not function if he suddenly goes to A. Basically, it's a potential issue for anyone that acts on the level of mindless bot. If your running around in multi-player, adapting to people coming out of random places and buildings getting wrecked, in this game, actively surveying terrain and the situation, odds are you are not going to be suffering from this because your actually using your brain, not in passive bot mode.

If chess is qdone in a balanced healthy way it's good. Chess tournaments can be a little tense sometimes, but for you keep the right attitude then it's ok. And at my chess club we have nice chats while we play and often laugh and joke so it's a very positive and relaxing place usually.

Also sharpens your mind better than most things can.

Pretty sure the article's addressing FPS-type games though, and also I'm assuming they looked at console gamers. So, considering WoWS isn't exactly an FPS, and the shadiness of the study anyways, I'm going to continue playing.

A lot of the responses summed up my thoughts pretty well.  A lot of crap.

I didnt read the actual study, but "researchers" can find something that will either kill you or make you stronger in just about anything.

Don't get me wrong, there is a lot of research that is, and has, proven to be invaluable.  Then there are studies like this that are a little out there.

If these, and other researchers, focused their talent and energy on more useful projects (cure for cancer, mental disorders, etc.), maybe they could discover new remedies faster.

Just a thought.
