New CV Player- bless me with your knowledge!

As the title says, I am brand new to the CV ships. I am almost strictly a DD player but just need something different.

The past few games I played I played as a Hosho and got seal clubbed by bogue fighters. I felt like an ant being dismembered by a praying mantis. It was pure r4pe. Since I am now working with the Zuiho I was wondering what you guys would suggest for modules and loadout, as well as captain skills. He currently has 13 points to spread around.

I was wondering if I could beg for a compilation of resources, tips and tricks, guides, anything, to help me become a better CV captain. I was thinking of practicing at T5 for a while then learning the ropes at T6, and then picking a popular CV between T6 or T7.

Bless me with your knowledge!

Kindly,

Arachniid

You see, I was in your position a month or so ago, but I took the Bogue instead...

She really is a nice boat, and the ability to murder any Japanese strike loadout is fun and cancerous.  All I can tell you is try to lock up his fighters in time for the TB drop.

13pt build.  http://shipcomrade.com/captcalc/0001010000010100001000000001000019

Not a big CV player but I do love t4/5 Cvs... Hosho especially is so much fun.

A few simple tips use allied AA to aid your fighter dogfight.

Use dive bombers to start fires and rack up DOT after they use their DC to fix flooding caused by torp bombers.

With Zuiho you really only have one loadout , the 1/2/1.

Edit: Modules are: Air Group 1, Flight Control 1, DCS 1.

when you are a tier lower, don't engaged in a fighter/fighter, but lure them back over ally bb/cruiser who had decent aa or a couple of ally ships then engage. Or totally micro manage to avoid fighters and just yolo hunting his dive bomb/torp, used your strike to bring to his CV. Or if a 2/2 CV game, communicate with the other CV player to co-ordinate a 2/1 fighters or 1 lure 1 attack. IJN fighter are weak.

Capt skills:

aircraft service expert

torp acceleration

torp armament expert

air supreme

Ship upgrades:

I normally go for buffing my fighters, faster getting planes of my cv for faster strike

regards,

See Fara's carrier guide. Mostly IJN-centric, but the general chapters still contain information relevant to both lines.

Get to T6 (preferably the Ryujo over the Indy) and practice manual drops/strafes in co-op right from the get-go until you're out of stock.

Ranger is in a bad spot, so I'd stick with the IJN if you want to avoid a sticky spot in the middle tiers where premium CVs rule.

Thank you guys so much for your tips and help. I have been getting murked by bogues so I just run mostly. I will try to be a bit more evasive of the fighters and see what I can do.

Captain skills:

Aircraft Servicing Expert, Dogfighting Expert,

Torpedo Acceleration

Torpedo Armament Expert

Air Supremacy

All other captain skills are unnecessary on IJN CVs. If you have extra points, invest them in Emergency Takeoff, Concealment Expert or anything that will boost your AA.

Modules:

Air Group Mod 1

Air Group Mod 2

All other modules are unnecessary at lower tiers.

Always use the strike loadout on IJN CVs (that's 1-2-1 on the Zuiho).

Tips:

-Against fast moving targets it is possible to first do a torpedo strike from behind, and then from 90 degrees, in such a way that the torpedoes meet the enemy ship at the same time in a "cross drop". Especially effective against destroyers as it is impossible to dodge at least one torpedo.

-Try to set fires first, wait for the fire to be put out, wait about 10 seconds, and then try to flood the enemy. If done correctly, you will get a full minute of flooding damage without the enemy being able to repair it. In good battles, I can do between 1/3 and 1/2 of my damage with flooding and fire. Most ships put out a single fire, BBs usually let one burn but put it out if you set 2 or more.

-since you can't beat enemy fighters, spread out in two-squadron strike groups to quickly fire/flood lone ships which aren't being covered by enemy planes. If enemy fighters pursue, separate the squadron they are following from the rest and lead them over a friendly ship with good AA. Keep that squadron circling over the friendly ship as close as possible (obviously don't do this with DDs or cruisers which are trying to remain hidden).

-Before the battle begins, check the AA ratings of enemy ships and familiarise yourself with which ships are OK to strike, and which should be avoided. FEAR THE CLEVELAND.

-At tier 6, you will have to learn to strafe and manual drop. Practice this in co-op battles, then in randoms. Get really good at it- these will be the core skills of CV play.

EDITED to correct Zuiho loadout.

Sense, how is it that I get a 1-2-2 loadout? I seem to only be able to get 1-2-1 or 1-1-2. Do I need to be using different fighters?

Sounds like you don't have all the modules researched.

Sorry, I didn't play the Zuiho for very long. Use the 1-2-1. Torpedo bombers are FAR more effective than dive bombers. Use 1-2-2 on the Ryujo and 2-2-2 on the Hiryu.

Sigh. Just getting [edited] by everything. Reached my WoWs limit for the day. I am lost as to why things my rank are destroying me fighter wise. I will end up with all 5 destroyed and they will have 3 or 4 left. -.-

Maybe show us some replays? You will never, ever win a fighter fight in a Zuiho, so don't even try. Use your fighters to harass enemy strike squadrons when they want to make drops, or as sacrificial shields to distract enemy fighters or AA. Also, don't attack groups of ships.

Don't engage their fighters.  This holds true particularly for the Bogue but you probably want to avoid the Langley's fighter blob too.  Your fighters are not meant to take out the enemies,  they are meant to buy your bombers time to drop and hopefully time to get back.  Ostensibly you want to put your bombers where your enemy fighters aren't to avoid this,  but in those moments when you have to make an assault,  don't be afraid to sacrifice that fighter squadron to perform a drop.  And try not to get to frustrated when the enemy flies out the other side in decently good shape.

Also new to cv play but been playing the game off and on since closed beta. Is there anything I can do to not get 100% dominated by a Langley in the Hosho? It just feels like I can't compete even slightly every time I see one.

You really NEED at least a 10 point captain in a carrier nowadays. Best to retrain one you have, it really sucks to play them without a 10 pointer. Higher is always better of course.
