Interesting thing on Harekaze's model

So I was using the Extended Tech Tree mod to look at the Harekaze in the new Sarushima port and I happened to see something... weird:

.Can you see it? Just behind the A turret, but below the hull.

I thought it might be a graphics bug, so I loaded up the Naval Yard port to take a look at her underside. Lewd

Should be easy to see now. Here's a close-up:

I'm no ship expert, but that looks like a sonar pod-thingy to me. Which is ironic, since the Harekaze doesn't get hydro as a consumable, while ships that have hydro don't have any of these modeled in (Grozovoi has one as well, but it's minuscule in comparison).

Not sure if someone already posted this, as I just noticed today, but whatever.

It might be a bug, considering how it looks a bit.. off.

Also, ships that had hydro probably had it in their bow. In earlier version, underwater radar would be mounted like that (check Grozovoi, she has the same thing). However, as ships increased in size, radar could be fitted in the hull for a better streamlined profile, like Yamato. That bulbous bow not only makes her faster, but hides a sonar that's in there, sort of like radar in an airplane's nose.

You are so wrong it is hilarious.

Yamato never had a sonar system, that bulbous bow was solely for hydrodynamic's, same as all other BB classes built. I don't believe a single one ever mounted a sonar dome during war.

Early pods were just attached like that that. Later ships with them purpose built in had more hydrodynamic arrays, such as the ones we have now in the bow of the Burke Class, but that is not the universal placement. Check the Oliver Hazard Perry Class

Yamato did in fact have a sonar in that bulbous bow. Type 0 Sonar, and it was used to detect submarines that were dead in the water or at low speeds.

Most of Yamato's plans were destroyed after the war, so maybe that's why not much know of this.

Got any sources on this? Literally the only thing that shows up is the Kancolle wiki which is not a source.

I think you are looking at the fancy jet ski like skiffs they used in the first episode

Pretty sure there are no fancy jet skis lashed to the bottom of the boat.

Was looking at the center of the picture, my bad

Doesn't matter. every American ship in WW2 had radar down to PT boats, doesn't mean it will be in the game

It is a bug. Confirmed using hull plans. It is Russian. Assuming Harekaze is a Kagero-class destroyer.

If I may direct you to this scale model of the Harekaze, it is not a bug.

RheHsoK.jpg

It's likely part of the model from the anime.

Oh. LOL. Must have added something there. I guess the anime deviated there.

Yeah. The anime's not my cuppa, but the premise has most of those old WWII-era ships modernized, hence the modern maritime radar mount and all those accoutrements. I'm guessing the sonar dome's one of those.

If it was a late-war modification (if it was real, that is), it probably wouldn't show up in any blueprints, at least not any easily accessible ones.

Never heard of a modification of the sort being done but then again, I could be wrong. But from my expertise, it was most likely due to a modification done in the anime. And good job WG fo rnot just ripping the model of Kagero for this ship. Your attention to detail is noted.

"The Japanese Type 93 Model 3 sonar was a derivative of Model 1, which had been used on destroyers since 1933. It used a retractable quartz projector for both transmission and reception and had a non-retractable sound dome measuring 1.9m by 0.65m (6'3" by 2'2")."

Source: http://pwencycl.kgbudge.com/T/y/Type_93_Model_3_sonar.htm

Kagero class was built in 1939, so it could have used the Type 93, which as quoted above, used a non-retractable dome. Other sources say the Kagero's did have sonar, but don't mention any specific model. I couldn't find any pictures of them in drydock (although I didn't look too hard into that). The only source mentioning the Type 93 Mod. 3 in relation to any class was an article about the Akizuki class.

On another note the Gearing and the Groz both have sonar domes. The Fletcher does not, even though they historically had them; same goes for the Akizuki and normal Kagero.

Unfounatly, it is 70 pages long. At least it had some illustrations of the inner workings.

Okay, production ceased in July 1944, many after that were replaced with Type 3 sonar.
