Saw the Martin Mars up at Oshkosh last year at the EAA convention.  They were stuck at the seaplane base after striking something in the water earlier in the day and putting a big hole in the fuselage.

That's the downside to water landings...

I'm sure you are all aware that sometimes, the equipment fails and people die. Warning - this contains footage of a C130 loosing her wings.

Spoiler

Many other examples may be found of this sort of thing happening. IIRC, the big debate has always been mankind interfering with the natural burn cycle prevalent with forests, even deserts. The fires get larger - so it is said - and folks lose their lives fighting the fires, on the ground and in the air.

And that is one reason you are starting to see a lot of jets like the dc10, md80, and bac146

There were a pair of those DC-10's sitting at the Albuquerque airport for quite some time (one had been there all Winter). I wonder if there's a repair facility for them there, as for the last few years there's usually been one or two parked there during the off season.

Thanks for the post, too. That's some impressive footage.

"Technically, Jingles, that's not dive bombing..." Ahh, whatever...

The way the light hit the 6th one made it look like it was dropping Agent Orange.

The skill it requires to fly something that big, that low, that slow, in those canyons is just awe inspiring.  Hats off to all those men and women who can get it done.

I'm guessing the reason they use DC-10s for mail and flame retardant was because no passenger dared to set foot on one of those death traps.

A rushed design trying to keep up with Boeing.  The MD-11 was a far better design.

Can someone explain to me why they use DC-10s, which aren't exactly designed to fly at low speeds at low altitudes, when there are a plethora of heavy lift aircraft that are designed for low speeds and low altitudes?

Namely... C-130 Hercules, which already has a fire extinguishing variant

My guess is that they had a bunch of old failed jumbo jets sitting around doing nothing and could probably put to use very cheaply.  They already designed the refueling tanker KC-10, so converting a DC-10 into a water drop variety was probably cheap and easy.  So why not use it?  No one has bothered to use them for transit anymore since 2007.  The only other use for a DC-10 I can think of is blowing them up for the sake of a movie, Air Force One 2 anyone?
