I'm looking for a trainer for my German Captains. My Emden is much beloved but I think something a bit higher on the food chain is in order. Thoughts? I can afford one or the other but not both. I'm kinda leaning to the Scharnhorst. I liked him better anyway.

Sharnhorst is the best choice by far. You generate a tiny bit less XP overall, but you more than make up for it by not having to fight tier Xs in 80% of your matches.

Tirpitz is a great ship, but not when fighting tier Xs all the time. If they EVER fix the matchmaking for tier 8s, then you can consider picking it up. Right now, its not worth it.

The Tirpitz is a great ship, but yeah as they said the MM can kinda hinder you.

I have both.  if I had to pick one, it would be the Scharn and the choice would be easy.

I'm the same here. I adore Tirpitz, especially after the secondary buff, but my love is the Scharnhorst. She's a BB but with all the best qualities of a cruiser.

So I can play my Scharnhorst like a cruiser and not get near as punished as say my Des Moines, and not seeing tier 10s helps... A LOT.

Takes getting used to lower caliber guns, and using them effectively, but the tiering issues cited above make Scharn the better choice.

Besides; if you want to play with manual secondaries, Scharn can still do that, just on a lesser level than Bis-ko and Tirpitz.

7.6km is nothing to sneeze at while at tier 7.

Have to agree, and even when uptiered....that rate of fire really comes in handy, switch to HE and spam tier 9 bb's. Not glamourous but very effective. However, you can't go wrong with either. very satisfying playing against tier 10 ships and holding your own.

Both are solid, but I find Tirp is more fun to play. Great RoF, secondaries, armor and mobility.

She plays like a BB should.

I find Tirpitz to be more fun.

Scharnhorst is great, tier for tier, but try to fight things bigger and better, and it gets a little tough on the 11" AP. Impeccable MM though, most of the time.

Meanwhile Tirpitz can beat up T10 BBs with it's fantastic armor. It cares not that you are a Yamato. It will bounce you and catch you on fire and smash your broadside and torpedo you with style; but only if you know what you're doing.

Both are great ships, and both will constantly be in fire. Learn to deal with that, and get some good angling, and both are golden. Though watch for Scharnhorst's bow, it gets overmatched.

Scharnhorst does have an advantage over Tirpitz in the fact that she has thicker belt armor.

I'd vote shinyhorse as well, just note that those tiny guns require a fair bit more skill to make work than the 15 inchers of tirpitz. The tiering is just SH's best friend.

That thicker belt armor only means something against HE and certain AP shells, battleship shells will punch into that no matter what broadside on. Not to mention the upper belt armor on tirpz is thicker closer to the deck.

I only have the Tirp, and its my favorite ship so far. Its a fantastic ship and the secundaries buff made her even better. Yes it faces t10 but it can hold against them really well, and when its top tier Tirp is a beast, you have nothing to be afraid off.

My experience against Scharn i never afraid off her when im on a BB, i doesnt have the firepower to kill you if you angle. When im on a BB i fear more any other BB, even a t6, more then Scharn.

Scharnhorst = oversized cruiser with 7.6 secondaries and a 20 second reload with a side order of torpedoes

Tirptiz = Deutschland Uber Alles....cause nothing is better than 10.6 secondaries AND torpedoes and a 15 inch main battery that hits hard.

You might as well get used to Tier 10 matches if you want to climb the line and Tirpitz can and does carry very well. The torps are just gravy when you have a 10km PISS OFF DD zone! It's even more glorious when you have manual secondaries as well...

Or just buy both and print reichsmarks!

Also, T7 will be much more forgiving when you are working with a low skill captain trying to get him levelled up.  I found Tirpitz tough to use until I had the captain skilled up the way I wanted.  Tirpitz has gotten way better for me with 14 pts.  I don't want to drop a lower skill captain into it anymore.

As a player who has both, I strongly suggest the Scharnhorst. Here's why (at least for me):

I purchased the Tirpitz after only a couple of months in playing the game. I got it so that I could do the ARP Challenges. At that time, I had no grasped or fully understood the dynamics of battleship play, let alone in high tier battles in Random. I got destroyed. To this day, my solo win rate in Random is horrible, as it goes hand in hand with my abysmal play in the Tirpitz. I have yet to recover from that mistake. I had no business getting that ship when I did. I don't regret getting it, rather the point in time, in which I did.

I don't recall when I picked up the Scharnhorst, but it was last fall when it went on sale, and it fit my play style perfectly. It also helped that at the time, I was in the T6 New Mexico and had learned so much more about the game and game play in general. I mainly use the Scharnhorst in co-op (mainly a co-op player in general). Used her to get my first 19-pt cmdr in the game. The game play with this ship is awesome. It's so multi-purpose, and more forgiving if you make a mistake from time to time. You also benefit from better MM.

Cheers!

This. This guy and I basically did the same thing. I grabbed Tirp along with Prinz for the Oct/Nov Ranked and ARP, and I'm STILL trying to recover my overall rating from that ONE month, in both Ranked and Randoms.

My advice is to never buy your way to a tier, earn your way, and THEN buy the premiums at that tier.

I'd go with Scharn all day long. She's much more versatile, and she uptiers better. That 11 inch AP can in fact shred BB's, if you use it correctly, and it will of course murder any cruiser in the game. She's faster, turns better, has a higher rate of fire than Tirp. You could just spam HE all day long and be golden, her RoF ensures you'll set fires over and over. More, she's a stealthy ship, for a BB, and if you want to spec for it, you can make her a BB ghost. When I'm playing, I'd much rather see a Tirp than a Scharn.

I'd rather be in a Tirpitz against tier 10 than a Scharn against tier 9. The Scharn's guns are much weaker against higher tiered ships. With the a Tirpitz you have big guns, secondaries and torps.
