Hey all;

Been playing for about a month, mostly co-op to "get my sea legs".  I normally approach the game the same way every time (depending on class, of course) but find my results all over the map.  One game I'll kill 4+, the next I'm the first one down with not a shot fired.  The next, top of the leader board again.  Is it just bad luck or what?  If I'd be changing up what I do and how I could see reasoning for such a large contrast, but this baffles me.

Anyway, I try to do a little bit of this, and a little bit of that with all classes.  Don't really have a favorite or a least favorite, they're all great in their own ways and they all aren't so great in their own ways.  End-of-the-day though, I have fun 90% of the time, which is to say it's a good thing.  Keep on keepin' on, and have a may your evening skies always be red.

It very well might!  Actually, I was raised there.  Been everywhere (active duty brownshoe USN, retired), holed up in (quad-state-area) PA now.

Likewise!  I have quite a few close friends from the USAF (we rubbed shoulders from time to time). Amazing how most everyone knows someone from somewhere if you've been around long enough.  Only experience I have with Chicago is "Great Mistakes".  Loooong time ago.

I'd suggest you find a mentor. That sounds weird, but find someone else to division with and usually you'll find a broader aspect of how the game works by discussing where to go in a division. Some people will explain why they don't like going one way or the other on a map. Then you can get a broader perspective.

I'm a new player myself ( about 6 weeks) and over 600 battles. Mostly Co-Op and I have found same thing, hot one time cold the next. I think it's the way your fellow team mates play that makes the difference. The bots play under a certain set of rules as to who they target and how they do it. If you are aggressive and go at the foe you become a priority target. If some of your team support you there are less guns (and torps) on you. If the hang you out to dry your cannon fodder. Keep an eye on the minimap and try to stay part of the team.

I'm a Viet Nam era vet. Huey crew chief and Ranger trained Pathfinder with the 101st. Grew up and live in the North Subs of Chicago.

Don't charge in, stay with the group. Use your speed to help dictate engagements. This works with all classes, excepting CV's. If your speed keeps changing, it's really hard to hit you, and it helps keep your turrets aimed where you need them. Check your ammo type, make sure you're using the right ammo for the right situation, it can, and will, make all the difference in the world. Be certain of where on a ship you're firing, damage saturation causes a huge dropoff in damage dealt, it simply can't take any more, you need to shift your fire. If where you're hitting is black, shift your fire elsewhere.

Just a few things to help, there are quite a few guides here on the forums, plus a lot of videos on Youtube, Twitch, and PlaysTv, as well.

Buckeye... I see you are/were a Gunslinger.

I was on CVN-75 and 105 was part of our CSG. Did a cruise with them in 2010. Any chance you were there?

There are all sorts of ways you could have such random results, keep in mind there is RNG in the game so sometimes you hit everyshot and have a great result because of it, other times you might hit every shot yet your shells shatter or bounce, or every shot might even miss.

It's all random really when it comes down to the real shell mechanics, but the general stuff you should know is this:

If you're in a Destroyer, try to find out what your detection range is, stay out of that range when you attack enemy ships if possible, think sneaky, see an island? maybe try posting up behind it and waiting if you see a Battleship coming by, then torp him into the depths. See a couple cruisers coming right for you?, if there's an island try to duck behind it, if not, high tail it in the opposite direction. And of course this all depends on the destroyer's nation, for example if you're in a low tier U.S. Destroyer, go for shooting everything with your guns, you win most brawls against other destroyers with your guns if you're a U.S. Destroyer, if you're in a low tier Japanese Destroyer it's a little tricky, but try torpedo's at the very edge of your detection range, so let's say you've got a 6.6 km detection range and 7 km torpedos, try to fire at ships at around 6.7 kms away with your torps. Or if they're coming towards you fire at the max range of your torps because that enemy ship is closing the distance, if they're sailing away don't fire torps, just stalk them for later.

I don't know if any of this is really helpful, if you need specifics feel free to contact me, I specialize more in Battleship and Carriers but I can talk all day about Cruisers too, Destroyers though I'm still learning, the stuff above is just some of the stuff I've learned.
