why is this in "Battleship era" if they are modern day ships in a scifi movie?

I'm still laughing that they had to license the name and say "based on the board game by hasbro", because of a ten minute action sequence that involves them firing at grid coordinates.

That movie is such an insult to action and war movies that I'm ashamed to say that Liam Neeson is in it.

They fired at the grid coordinates at a vain effort to tie the movie into the game. They producers picked the association with Hasbro's game, Hasbro didn't say Hey, you're using our IP! Coulda Shoulda Woulda called it something completely different and it would have been less, a bit, insulting. At least to the game.

Oh yeah, and, wrong forum area.
