I'm finally getting up to the tiers where this is a factor and I've been wondering a while.

On those ships with secondaries that can be used either against surface targets or aircraft, like the famous 5/38" guns of the USN, is there a way of designating which you would prefer them to go after?  After all, there are times you'd rather have them swat that pesky DD rather than an empty TB squadron that is also in range, or the other way around.

Likewise, how about Atlanta?  Her awesome AA capability is due to her 5/38" main guns.  Will they switch to aircraft if Defensive AA Fire is activated is is there another way?

They always fulfill both roles. So for example the Iowa's Secondaries can both try and hit the DD while filling the air with lead.

Since it is a game, you can both select a plane squadron and a DD and those secondaries would still be able to shoot both that and the DD. You know, cause it's a game. Magic.

It's completely automated so you don't have to worry about it.

That said (and this isn't necessarily directed at just you but to everyone), you should always designate a squadron for your AA to concentrate on by ctrl+clicking them.  Your AA will still fire at everything in it's range but the DPS will go up against the squadron that you have designated.

Yep, what everyone said. They work both roles at the same time.

Hey Corvus! I talk about this in my Anti-Air and Defensive Fire guide. Here is a snippet and is what you are looking for.

Keep in mind that your AA armament are firing as soon there is a target in range since that is the only limiter. AA guns are not limited by angles, terrain and/or superstructures (even friendly ones). Some large caliber AA guns are Dual-Purpose (DP) acting as secondaries too, such as the 127 mm/25 Mk19 that are on the Pensacola. Those guns are not limited to only one purpose and can engage targets both in air and on surface simultaneously.

Even though the guns are not firing in the sky the game engine calculates the damage and effect it on those planes. I talk about more in depth in the guide.

yeah, this is a very poorly communicated game mechanic, so don't feel ashamed in asking away.

When I was starting off, I asked the same question myself.

Thank you for your replies, guys, and especially you, HCR for your write-up.

I got busy and hadn't been back to the forum until today.
