I havent tried ranked battles before, and was thinking about giving it a go this season. Any suggestions for which Tier 6 ships are the better choices? Also for a first timer in ranked battles, do anyone have suggestions for what class to try to stick to? Thanks for any followup advice.

The ships you are familiar with and think you play good/best.

The best ship for you for Ranked is the ship you are best at playing.

Folks here might suggest their favorite ships but you really want the ship you are most comfortable in and know best.

For example, there is a good bit of talk about the Anshan and how it has advantages.  But I suck in the Anshan so I won't take it.  On the other hand, I tend to excel in the Farragut and will sail into Ranked with her, though many do no like the ship due to her shorter range torps.

Ernst Gaede, Leander and New Mexico are your best non-CV performers, but New Mex might get outclassed by Mutsu and Fuso unless you really know how to play her.  I would go with Ernst initially and see how she works for you.  If you want to CV Then Independence obviously.

Most importantly play as part of your team, not a Solo Yolo.

I agree with the others - choose ships that you're most comfortable with. You'll perform better with familiar ships, and your Ranked experience will be more enjoyable.

Some other tips:

  • Communicate constantly with your team
  • Call targets and focus fire
  • Warm up before each session
  • Start early and set small, achievable goals
  • Keep a positive attitude - don't berate your team-mates
  • When frustrated, take a break

Good luck with Season 7!

Team play, dont yolo, focus fire, play the ship you are most comfortable with, be aware of the meta shifts at around R15, R10 and R5. By the end of last season I was burnt out, but, I was able to keep going because I set myself a goal, get at least +2 stars per day, then stop, unless you are on a win streak, then keep going until you have a loss. Mind you this was R5 to 1, so the grind was much heavier there.

Thanks again for the advice, settled on the New Mexico as I liked that ship. Have played 4 battles, won 2 lost 2. Only made one big mistake so far. Positioned myself badly near some islands (not close enough) and was HE spammed into oblivion.

Play what you're good at.  Also, don't hesitate to jump in.  The first few ranks are unrevocable, giving you a nice introduction to ranked without losing a star.   And there are lots of goodies as you rank up.  So the first several ranks are a win/win.

That said, things do get salty and frustrating once you move further up the ranks.  It becomes a grind.  And to a certain extent, less "fun". As the objective transitions from "fun" to "ranking".  Unless one's fun is ranking...in which case, to each his/her own.

But don't let that discourage you.  Jump in.  Beginning is nice.  Then play as far as it's still enjoyable to you.  This is my fourth ranked, if I remember correctly.  First one to 18.  Second, I stopped at 15.  Next at 14.  I'm currently at 12.  Not sure how much further I'll go.  Probably play several matches a night and just see where I end up.

Just an update 2 stars on rank 14 and switched to the Arizona for the ship I run, still running about 66-75% win rate and surviving the matches so far been fun, been lucky to have mostly decent teams that worked together.
