Greetings all,

Ever since she has been in-game people have wondered what the GK is. A fantasy ship? A paper ship? What? Well, up until this point the accepted answer is that she is H40B with the triple turrets designed for Russia. Unfortunately, the drawings of H40B do not match our model of the GK. Namely, the position of the mainmasts and the distance between the rearmost funnel and C turret are incorrect.

Here is our GK

Here is the H40B

Notice that the forward mast points straight up, our GK's forward mast is slanted. Notice the rearmost mast is all by itself between C turret and the rearmost funnel, our GK's rearmost mast is just behind the rearmost funnel and the distance between the rearmost funnel and C turret is noticeably less. Notice that the H40B has 4 propellers, our GK only has 3. Finally, notice that H40B has dual rudders, like the Bismarck class, our GK has triple rudders.

So If it's not H40B, what is it?

I believe, in fact, I'm almost certain, that she's H41 with the triple turrets designed for Russia and also 128mm secondary turrets instead of 105mm.

Here is our GK again.

Notice that the forward mast is sloped, just like our GK's. Notice that the rearmost mast is right up against the rearmost funnel, juts like our GK's. Notice that the size of the rear superstructure and the distance between the C turret and the rearmost funnel matches that of our GK's. She has 3 propellers, just like our GK. Finally, notice that she has triple rudders, just like our GK.

Now, we may never know for sure exactly what GK is, but there is certainly no argument that H41 is a much better match visually over the H40B. However, one thing H40B has going for it is it's length, H40B would have been 299m long compared to H41 at 282m. Our GK is slightly longer than the Midway (295m) where if she was purely H41 she'd be slightly shorter.

+1 - Very good analysis.  The funnel spacing though seems to be more along the line of the H40B along with the catapult / plane placement.  Seems to be a hybrid developed for the game - good compromise for the game..

Given that there were no drawings of the the earlier H drawings and thus any of the pictures shown are pure speculation, and given that upper structures can be rebuilt as needed, there is no "burying the hatchet" here.

On that note, I wonder if dseehafer knows what "burying the hatchet".

Honestly I think she was thrown together in the same manner Conquerer was, meaning it's more a hypothetical H-series design versus one the Germans actually made.

No drawings of the early H series??

You do know that two H39 class battleships were layed down and contracts for the construction of the other four had been awarded, right? I'm pretty sure you need plans to build  ship.

Furthermore, the shipbucket drawings are based on those shown by German naval expert and author Siegfried Breyer. So they're as reliable as you can get.

Now, I cannot prove that WG did not modify H40Bs superstructure to look like H41, but I see no reason for them to do so, after all, they modeled H39 perfectly. Changing the armament is necessary for balance, but changing the superstructure? Not necessary. But again, I can't prove that they didn't change it, just that it doesn't necessarily make sense that they would.
