No, they are pretty different.  Both do set fires well and they are both cruisers, but that pretty much were the similarities stop.

I have the Molotov and the Takao , the ARP version of the Atago , identical except for the camo . The Atago has a heal and much better armor along with much better torpedoes , she's far more forgiving and versatile than the Molotov . Both can be flamethrowers , both are fun ,  but the Molotov is fragile .

Atago excels at bullying other cruisers and punishing BBs with fire and torps.

All Cruisers are fragile.  Molotov is fragile a.f., but Atago like other IJN Crusiers is a floating citadel.  At Tier VIII she often sees firepower that will easily, instantly wreck her so that her repair party is of no use with such catastrophic salvos.

completely different mentality when u play those 2 ships.

Molotov is the opportunistic sniper which u have to play with an abused puppy mentality.

Atago is like a ninja assassin and skirmirsher who fades in and out of stealth to rain fire on enemy.

I find that I can kite easier in the Atago , the Molotov just seems to get wrecked easier . I still enjoy both but I feel like I'm running for my life more so in the Molotov .

No. Molotov is just a long-range sniper.

 

Atago is way-more versatile, stealthy, very maneuverable, good armor, strong torpedo and on top of all these she has heal.

Atago is a much (x1000) better ship.  The Molotov is a one trick pony where as the Atago has all the bells and whistle at it's disposal.

Atago is overall the better ship yes but Molotov excels exceptionally at the thing its good, which is guns.

Molotov is much less forgiving but it has the most OP guns of the tier bar none. If you learn Molotov, it is very fun and rewarding. Also capable of single handily carrying matches and probably easier to do at T6 MM vs T8MM.

My win rate in Molotov is 67-68%, can't say the same about my Atago which is at about 60%. (everything solo)

Don't get me wrong, I own the Molotov (it's my third most played tier VI ship) and I enjoy it's ability to nuke a CA with those massive guns.  Yet, it's guns are the only thing it has going for it.  Compared to the full tool box of goodies the Atago has, it's no contest.  They play completely different and the Atago is a vastly better ship.
