BB HE V DD-Do they do the right amount of damage?

Do BB HE rounds V DD-Do they do the right amount of damage?  That would have been done in real life if that class of BB hit that class of DD with HE rounds?

That depends on how many hitpoints the historical DD had in real life, back then.

Seems to me this thread is a veiled 'My BB HE should one-shot DDs because history' complaint. In which case my answer is 'yes, the damage they do is fine'.

For the sake of game-balance, many elements of realistic combat were thrown outta the way with the implementation of a hit-pool system.
Because let’s be honest, it doesn’t take much damage to cripple warships.
It can take a single shell, it can take a single torpedo. And that’s not talking about magazine detonations.
But that wouldn’t make for stellar gameplay.

If realistic shell characteristics were in place in this game, any destroyer would be foundered by a battleship salvo. A 14-18.1 inch shell hitting a small ship would rip a hole in the sides and cause massive flooding.

I kid. I meant for if the shell hits the sides of the hull, causing a hole for water to come in. 

 

IJN gunnery was starting to get bad by the end of the war, evidenced by the fact that two of the ships (Sammy B. and one of the escort carriers I think) were sunk by Kongō, the oldest ship in the IJN. Yamato got a hit on Gambier Bay if I recall too.

 

Anyway, I was going for hull hits near to the waterline, not in general. My fault for not being clear.

People really don't want to bring "IRL" into "How things should be in WoWS."

 

First, BBs would utterly dominate this game.  They'd wreck Cruisers and Destroyers, IRL there was actually a very serious concern if your force were outclassed by the enemy force.  Those 127mm, 150mm, 155mm, etc. guns found on DDs, Cruisers, and Battleship secondaries would all reach out the same range, so even more in favor of the Battleship. 

 

Even a division of Destroyers would be concerned with taking on a force with any Cruiser in it for the simple fact that a single Cruiser had the firepower of a handful of Destroyers.  Captain Hara Tameichi goes into this repeatedly in his book "Japanese Destroyer Captain" and the value of a Cruiser.

 

If you want "IRL" and "authenticity" many ships, especially from the nations without decent or great radar and radar gunfire control, would not be able to maintain a good aim while maneuvering.

 

And then, to throw all this out the window, "IRL" had completely unfair Match Making.

You don't cherry pick history to back up what you want without taking everything as a whole.

WoWs is a arcade game not a historical naval simulator.  So "real life" is quite irrelevant. But for game balance, yea I think BB HE does the right amount of damage. I think there is maybe a argument that BB AP does too much damage though.

If it were close to IRL - Carrier would dominate the game. There is a reason they rapidly supplanted the Battleship.

 

That aside - Yes, BB HE is as close to what it would do in game to reality probably given a full on target salvo of rounds meant to arm almost the instant they touch something can nearly delete a DD. That said THIS IS AN ARCADE GAME, NOT A SIM, IT IS HISTORICALLY BASED BUT NOT 100% BEHOLDEN TO HISTORY IN ORDER TO BALANCE IT. Otherwise, we wouldn't have two camps fighting saying CV's are OP and UP respectively. Everyone would just say they are OP and it'd be world of carriers.

 

Also, yeah, read up on Taffy 3 - those ships got torn to pieces by a superior force defending the escort carriers they were assigned to but they stayed up and fighting through quite a bit.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure the US Navy cheated the MM with all those CVs sending hundreds of bombers against Yamato's team in Operation Ten-Go hehe.

 

But yes, there would be no MM restrictions on CVs, either.  Things like 6+ CVs in a unit were happening in the war with the Japanese kicking it off like that for Pearl Harbor and later.  The US Navy even multiplied that with tons of CVs "in one team" :cap_fainting:

Most BBs can sink a DD with a full broadside salvo, sometimes minus a round or two. That's about right since with good aim and some luck one-shots are possible, but most times a dodging DD can evade enough to escape. Making the encounter a sure thing either way would be poor game design.

in real life, if a battleship sized he shell hits a destroyer, you are looking at a hole 20 feet deep, and 40 feet wide, at the very least.
