There are not many build recommendation for Atago post 0.6.0  patch.

for the 5th slot, should I get concealment or the rudder?

Rudder seems pretty solid choice for me since cruisers likes to fire their guns all the time anyways.

But I wanna hear from more experienced Atago captains

Concealment mod has always worked best for me in the Atago, the ability to fire and disappear after 20 seconds is always helpful.  She also gets down to 9.1 km concealment with both mod and captain skill.

Once you have concealment expert, SGM3 really starts to make sense.

If you do not have concealment expert yet, then you should stick to CSM1, because Atago is able to severely punish DDs and cruisers at its minimum concealment range.

I definitely prefer concealment.  With the concealment upgrade + captain skill, you can actually stealth torp.  Torps aren't her primary source of damage, but they come in handy pretty often once you have that 9.1km concealment. And if you start getting focus fired, with 9.1km concealment, you can often just stop firing for a little bit and "go dark" until you've healed up and/or reached a better position.

Rudder is good enough for me with just the 20% rudder shift upgrade.

I have concealment as I had a stealth build, but in the post-Open stealth fire world... might try the steering mod if you have CE already.

As said, I'd take concealment module over the Steering mod. The Rudder is already decent enough in my opinion, but the main benefit is the 9.1km detection range that you get with Concealment mod, and Concealment expert. Really helpful for slipping away from engagements, sneaking up on people like DD's, moving around without enemies knowing, and making life in T10 games as bottom tier a bit more relaxing to name a few things.

If you have the money, you could test it out, i.e., what it's like with the Steering mod, and compare what it's like without it. But the Concealment is something that is unrivaled by any cruiser at this tier, so not something you'd pass up easily :Smile_hiding:

I admit, I don't have Atago proper (I have the ARP Takao, same class) which from what I see is similar/same beyond the rave colours, and if thats the case, go stealth. Torp's may not be her "primary" weapons in that case - but that ability to stealth torp comes in handy if you find yourself alone against say, 2 BB's and a cruiser that can't quite gain on you as you run to avoid obliteration but still manage to launch and either force them to avoid and slow even further or score hits that eventually sink or discourage them. It's like the fusion of BB heal, CA weapons, DD stealth that makes it a possible terror ofthe seas, but thats just my opinion.

On Atago you want concealment since you can get it down to 9.1km, To put this into context, this is better than the Edinburgh by 0.2 km but you'll have 203s vs 152s and give you a 0.9km stealth torp window.

Wiggle in nice, but concealment means hopefully less people shooting at you over time - more time to set up your own shots/torps - enjoy when people are not firing at me verses hoping I avoid their shots (we have all been there where you do everything right, most shells miss but one derpy shell peels away 1/2 your hit points)

Concealment, without question. Especially since I often use Atago to train captains who might not have Concealment Expert.

The only ship I would consider ruddershift on instead of concealment is the Moksva since the ship is rudder shift limited not turning radius limited. Most other ships dont have good enough turning radius and bad enough rudder crapto make rudder shift more advantageous than concealment.

stealth build is an absolute no brainer, 9.1km detection range makes this thing an absolute murder machine

Atago with stealth is scary, popping up 9.1km away from a cruiser or a battleship? They would be startled. Plus you can stealth torp.

Concealment, while the stealth fire nerf may have hurt her but still with the Mod and the Cap skill she can still pull off a 9.1km detection, which can be really handy

I have yet to find a ship where the rudder mod makes sense over consealment.

Nope.

Still running 8.7k detection in mine. Use it to quite good effect. Battleships doge torps with rudder shifts worse than what Khab has.

Concealment. The saying goes "you can't hit what you can't see" and not "you can't hit what turns slightly faster".

It's a play-style choice really. Stealth vs more WASD power.

Personally I'd still go with concealment. Having that extra stealth allows you to easily disengage and sneakily move into optimal positions.

(Based upon playing ARP Takao.)

Actually, you can drop torps on approaching enemies at ~11.5km, as they'll sail into range before your torps reach them, so the window is a bit bigger than 0.9km, effectively.

Concealment also affects enemy dispersion iirc

Yes, the new concealment upgrade module gives you a -5% accuracy to enemy ships targeting you.

CSM1.  IJN Cruisers on average have the best detection ranges as a Cruiser Line.  I'd kill to have that detection range on my RU & German Cruisers.
